  1. To make an important point, atheism is not necessarily a pathway to a moral existence. If I pushed that too hard then I would be the same as the theists who claim that unbelievers have no moral compass. I will try and honest as I can though and claim that we, atheists, have a better chance at walking that path! This will probably earn me a down vote but please challenge me first if you can. I have my reasons, better to be honest than search for upvotes right?
  2. I think reasonable people, theistic and atheistic agree with this. Ancient societies had codes of conduct and ethics otherwise they would not have survived, certainly not long enough to establish settlements, towns. Co-ordinated and co-operative enough to leave archaeology. Society and ethical behaviour would have had to have been there when humans were hunter gatherers, populations of ancestral humans, populations of evolving primates struggling to survive. That is was societal animals have evolved to do, co-operative, work together and look after each other. Extant primates exhibit these behaviours today with no written rules or holy books. So Evolution, societal behaviours, societies, social evolution, codification, rites, rituals and religion. For the record I am an atheist and I get my morals from all sorts of sources today including my primate Evolutionary past.
  3. Just to add the other posts hopefully you will find this link useful. Part of the ZDHC process. https://mrsl-30.roadmaptozero.com/ This is an initiative by brands and industry to reduce and eliminate dangerous chemicals from production. Permethrin is mentioned as restricted use in section 1B Chlorophenols are mentioned in section 1E, used in pesticides. PFAS Chemistry is ubiquitous (was) but is now being heavily restricted. Part of the "forever chemicals" group. These are not normally associated with pesticides (don't hold me to that) Uses are in textiles and surface chemistry like Teflon, nonstick, water repellent chemistry, stain release and fire fighting materials. +1 as a very important group that is now going through a series of restrictions.
  4. Not really pertinent to the OP Sarae. Hitler may have had a neurological condition like Parkinson's or even syphilis, it would not have stopped him being an evil psychopath. It is worth remembering that he wrote "Mein kampf," when he was in his 30s. What do you think about your approach to holy books such as the books of the Bible and questions today about our world? Having read some replies?
  5. A quick glance yes that's right. They found a positive correlation wrt to pigmentation and distance to the plant, measured colour and screened the liver for oxidative stress/markers but no mention of genetics.
  6. +1 I certainly do! I posted on another site as there was a physics angle to it. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/eva.13476
  7. As VAT said, that phenotype could have been here already in small numbers as a variation, and now that variant and off spring of that variant are able to survive. It is a shame the same thing did not happen with Dutch Elm in the 1960s/70s. Also fungal disease like dieback, that was spread by beetles which devastated the UK population and elsewhere.
  8. Most of the popsci stuff I have read talks about wormholes but the consensus appears to be that they are unstable.

You understand wrong then. Learn some real science.
  10. As yet the scientific method has not found anything that shows any signs of just being created. To my knowledge. What specific example can you give of a creation as opposed to a natural process?
  11. Just a quick word on what the prophecies were, these were pronouncements on the the current times by social commentators not seers with crystal balls. In Amos time time he was telling his community in no certain terms they were hypocrite's, celebrating festivals and holy days but the for show. Amos 5; 21 "I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me." 23: "Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps." The major prophets too, the people were not obeying the law in that time. Revelation is not different in that respect, it is a message for the people around at that time and John was the spokesperson for god because this had been revealed to him. The message this time was simply, god will come and destroy the Romans and establish his new kingdom on earth, Rome will be destroyed and the righteous will prevail. This did not happen of course. Rome did fall in the 5th C but it was nothing to do with a new kingdom of Yhwh.
  12. Iran has attacked a US base in Qatar, it looks like they were prepared and warned. Minimal damage as the missiles were taken out by air defence systems. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdjxdgjpd48o
  13. I always think Evolution with this sort of question. The brain rewards the body for health enriching behaviours, you are very hungry and eat it feel pleasant, eating keeps you alive. You wake a numb arm it feel unpleasant, blood starts to return it feel pleasant again, normal blood flow good, ischemia bad. What of an itch? Well removing an insect is better than one your skin potentially spreading disease and or biting you but the scratch itself can break the skin opening you up to (literally) infection. I had a quick search and found this which mentions pain receptors overriding the itch sensation. https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/scratching-feels-good
  14. None of this has anything to do with the subject topic. Are you going to respond to the specific points regarding natural selection? The "Manchester" moth is another great example and very easy to see how the environment acts on a population and natural selection plays out.
  15. Why within species boundaries? Species are a human invention convenient for categorization and study. An evolving population will not care if its morphology is no longer fitting in with our taxonomic nomenclature. Why would a population stop evolving if the environment continued to pressure it to do so?
  16. You could say some of the other launches had successful elements. He was just what space flight needed, lots of launches, new technologies, reusable kit. Then Trump, DOGE and insanity. France is urging Europe and other partners to compete with him on low orbit satellites. An article in physics.org today. He could have been instrumental in pushing space flight to the next level. Now, every achievement leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. Be nice if Europe could knock him of his perch. https://phys.org/news/2025-06-macron-europe-space-power.html
  17. Carl Linnaeus did that in the 18th century completely independent of the Theory of Evolution, obviously.
  18. I think you have a very confused idea of what these concepts are. Natural selection is simply the environment selecting traits, we have done this historically with crops, livestock and domestic dogs. Evolution is a fact, the Theory of Evolution explains those facts and natural selection is part of the process.
  19. Yes, from what I have read there was not one type of Jew that had one view of scripture. Jesus was constantly debating scripture with his peers, one of the cornerstones of his ministry was his push back against authorities on scripture. A little more needs to be said on Revelation as this exemplified Apocalyptic thinking. What was it? The concept was that there were two forces at work, Yhwh and his angels who is good and the devil and his demons who were making things bad in the world, famine, birth defects, war. In time Yhwh would come to earth and destroy the devil and all who took his path and rejected god. The righteous would be rewarded in the new Kingdom on earth and the wicked destroyed. The dead would be raised and judged also. The writing itself was a genre and started with Daniel. Apocalypse itself means a "revealing," as the writer claimed to have knowledge hidden from the reader. The person is often taken to heaven, shown signs and visions as does John in his Revelation.
  20. These changes may or may not have been gradual, scholars put the change around 200 years before Jesus. Mark 1:15 sums it up. "And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel." "Good news" same thing. So that means the new Kingdom is upon us, you need to get your act in order before you are judged. He continued this theme throughout his ministry like John the Baptist before him. Paul was an apocalyptic Jew as was the author of "the book of Revelation" John, whoever that was. The book is also called, "The apocalypse of John." So Jesus his Apostles, followers and Bible authors from Daniel. Yes, as we're the Christians.
  21. Jesus was an apocalyptic Jew, he thought the world as he knew it was coming to an end in HIS lifetime. The book of Revelation is part of that apocalyptic thinking at that time and the book is about that time, their time not this one. I think we can dismiss anything Trump has to say on the matter. He does not know what the Bible is.
  22. Can you at least tell us the which area of STEM? Technology? Physics? Astronomy? Biology? Engineering?
