What do you want the fence to enclose?

I was thinking about metal but realistically I will go to the local construction shop and buy what is reasonable. A balance between quality, look and price.

Yeah gardeners are always friendly, I noticed that. Not aware of any club but my neighbours(of the garden) are also in the same boat as me but with more experience so I try to inspire myself.

What about you studiot, are you actively gardening? Is it on a small scale hobby or a more profit driven actual profession?

  2. Thank you studiot for your answer. I know your pain, gardening is not a top hobby on a physics forum but you guys are the only people that I can ask certain questions. OFC I can google search but I found that raising such topics on this forum opens up a wider perspective and members sometimes go the extra mile and advise you further from your question or bring to your attention something that you were not aware of. (for example you brought my attention to the pests issue and the weed seed)

Are you as knowledgeable  about the fences? :D is there any preferred time to do it considering I want to make a cement base?(would a harsh winter affect this much? or should I wait till spring)

  3. Hello Forum,

I wanted to start a gardening thread for those passionate about this. I was always passionate about having a small piece of ground and taking care of it but I realise I am missing some knowledge in some areas.

I recently bought a small garden close to my house (click on spoiler) and as you can see it's in pretty bad shape. I am aware that I wont get to plant anything this year but my questions relate to the planing for next year.

1: I need to put a fence around it.
2: I want to remove some small trees and bushes. (don't ask why but I absolutely hate hibiscus)

3: I want to plant just a few veggies (like chillies) next year.

My questions are, considering winter is coming, what should I start doing this autumn and how. Is there any reason (easier?) why I should remove the bushes that I don't want in Autumn or Winter or Spring? What about preparation for planting the vegetables next year? Should I plow the ground or anything like that?  What is your advice on removing small trees? How to do it?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

:)  That sounds lovely!   I'm sure we'd have nice afternoon chatting and putting the world to rights.  I bet polar bears can really handle their drink though? I'm a bit of a lightweight these days.

It wouldn't be a problem in the UK if you are black or gay.  (are you? - not that I care either way. ;))  I think maybe the US is still a bit behind the UK and the EU when it comes to not seeing skin colour..... although a lot people still hold prejudices in private.   I have been shouted at for being white in a London before though...  and a Pakistani bloke hit me for being white once in a town near London, but that was a long time back and you have to think what that person might have been through to drive him to hate me because of my skin colour....  maybe he was just an arsehole......  or maybe he'd been called a 'Fucking Paki bastard' so many times he just flipped and lashed out  (at a 16 year old skinny boy who was half his size - brave lad). I learnt that I could take a punch that day though - I was still standing after it, even though I saw stars and went a bit wobbly.   I also learnt later that he had hit about 10 other young white kids the same day on his crusade against whites....  as I said - Something must have happened to him to hate us that much. :-(

Sweet sower story haha. Looking forward to that travel plan. We could film it and make it a morning show. "Skinny and the bear - A cup of Travel"

Why should anyone have to hide anything? Neither are illegal.

You took a part of my total sentence. I never said you should. Actually I added that you shouldn't.

People don't beat you up ridicule you for being black.

Let's you an me take a car ride through the UK countryside and have a pint at a few local pubs. Or better yet lets go to Alabama, Mississippi and talk to the friendly folks there  see how kindly they take to "your kind around these here ol' parts".
People absolutely still do get beaten/ridiculed for being black. Maybe not in your city.(although if you live in UK I'm curious what city that is)

To clarify, do you feel civil rights granting equal treatment to black people in the 1960s was a political cause? What about women's suffrage?

Yeah, it's exactly the same...being forcefully taken from your culture and continent and transported in the worst conditions possible to be made a slave in a different land then oppressed for hundred of years and probably more to come is the same as not getting your chosen cake design.

Gay marriage legal. Gay couples are free to marry in the U.S.. A gay couple getting married is no more a political statement than is a black person selecting where they sit on a bus. It is settled law and not some sort of ongoing protest.

I'm pretty sure not in all states. Stop comparing Gay to Black please. It is not the same as stated above. Aside for the many reasons why you shouldn't compare the two, you shouldn't but just in case you are in danger or you find it fit you could hide being gay. You can't hide being black.

People purchasing their products "too frequently" is not a logical complaint for a business lodge. The more cakes a baker sells the better their business is doing. The notion that "activists" are attacking Christian bakers by giving them business is absurd. It is a problem any business could only wish to have.

Ten Oz, would you bake me a Trump cake? That said "Absolutely our president now and forever" ?

The modern gay couple is not so weak to be destroyed by a Christian dude who doesn't want to bake a cake. I am being refused service here in Poland because I have a different nationality.

I want to buy a plot of land from a lady, I have the $$$ and all the documents but she refuses to sell it to me because I am not polish. You won't see my story in the news.

My point is that I agree this could have been a crusade.

Straw man. The guy just refused to make that specific cake. I am sure he would have baked a normal chocolate cake for them.

It's the political part he did not agree with.

  8. I once saw a cartoon where the characters went to a different earth timeline in which Christianity never existed.(this was the only difference)

Ofc it's a joke but even though they were also in the 21'st century, they had flying cars and all those technological advancements from sci-fi movies (as the dark age never occurred there). After seeing such blind and childish behaviour from some members I really believe that this scenario isn't off and looking forward we should slowly let go of superstitions and other immature, illogical concepts or keep them separate from science.

Saying stuff like science is at fault and relaying this idea via preaching in a church a laptop/phone/computer connected to faith internet on a Christian  science forum just seems hypocritical...

I learned the Kermode bear is a rare subspecies of the American black bear living in the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia, Canada. Most Kermode bears are black but there are about 100-500 white individuals. So  they are white Black bears...often called spirit bears. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermode_bear

This interests me greatly. Thank you. :)

I think I like how China handles this trade-war. I like the "This wont work on China" addition. It goes very deep.

I think the best approach with a political adversary is to focus on the positives and  particularly  their actions.  As a disinterested observer, America is not behaving  very well with China... or Iran.

I also feel the same. The problem is, as things stand right now, those two countries are the most important ones to not F with. (Russia aside as there is a Russian Elected POTUS)

it's the only thing I am asking how 'something' can be created out  of nothing?

    please, that's all I ask.

You probably reached the maximum number of posts for new members. Which is a good thing as I think you need a time-out to read what other members are trying to explain.

As other members pointed out - The big bang describes how the universe expanded from a very high-density and high-temperature state. (not from nothing)

There are some models which try to describe what you are talking about but it has nothing to do with the Big bang.

Stop searching for quotes in Ted talks. No one thinks or says that the Big Bang explains how the Universe was created from nothing.

  12. When in Rome do as the Romans do.  Why are we blaming google for this and not addressing the real issue here. The Chinese Gov.

I would find it invasive if you launch your product in a country without taking into account local regulations. (I realise that this censorship is very bad but this isn't google's fight)

If human rights are being violated in China you can expect google to literally perform a sort of terrorism attack and hack the Chinese firewall to bring people cat videos and free speech.

China is not known for it's rational decisions and compassion so I can imagine the ending of the above scenario.

A poll from 2017 does not match the question. How about one from 2013, or other non-Trump years? There have been many stories about how the US's standing has dropped since Trump took over.

Here is a conglomeration of past polls going back to 2002

    http://www.pewglobal.org/database/indicator/1/survey/all/

Almost every country saw a drop in US favorability after Trump was elected. Russia is a notable exception. But there are a lot of favorable opinions in there, at least during the Obama presidency (note how it tends to drop as Bush's time in office increased)

The overall favorability was close to 50% under Obama, with approval greater than disapproval, so there are a bunch of countries that liked the US

    https://news.gallup.com/poll/225761/world-approval-leadership-drops-new-low.aspx

I agree, it was a cheap red herring on my part but just over 50% is still not "love". Let's hold a similar poll for a country that is less full of itself like Croatia, New Zealand, Canada.

I'm sure (just speculating ) that they will have better results.

Focus on Global average. But also check the only 2 countries on this list who do love America. Nigeria and Kenya. After all the racism, police brutality against black people and all the other stuff,  Nigeria and Kenya are the only countries on this list that appear to have a positive opinion about US. (according to this debatable poll)

Who supports the idea that a positron is simply an electron going the other direction in time?

According to this PBS Space Time video (at 5:50 minutes), “antimatter is time reversed matter”. Does everybody here unanimously agree with that? Why (not)?

    Hello MarkE,

Don't limit yourself to youtube. If you want to find know more about this(Second Link) and also have some background (First Link) the two papers below will surely help. (I am currently going through the second one myself.)

    http://web.ihep.su/dbserv/compas/src/feynman48c/eng.pdf       - Space-Time Approach to Non-Relativistic Quantum Mechanics R.P. Feynman

http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1367-2630/14/9/095012/pdf  - Matter and antimatter in the universe

I really lack the knowledge and confidence right now to really agree or disagree with your post but I will leave a statement that I came across that:  "physics is not time-reversal invariant."

Do you want to share it with your future self to make that future self more secure and comfortable?

If the last one (share with your future self to better enable financial comfort and stability), then it's hard to beat a low-cost index fund that tracks to the market itself.

Future self is all I think of :). I will surely look into index funds today. Are you using them as well?

Haha, like Sensei mentioned and I forgot to, I live in Poland so some options here don't apply but I hope other members that live in the US can take advantage. Also it's the reason for the delay in answering.(Most of you are probably enjoying REM right now)

I am not big on alcohol but I am essentially a man-child so I do have some costly addictions related to games and sports.

Like Sensei mentioned, Poland is on the up now so a good idea might seem to buy real estate here - a plot of land, a small apartment. Sadly, without a loan, thats way out of my reach now so hence my original post.

Anyway thanks to all, even though there have been no material profits from this thread (yet) morally and intellectually profits are flowing.

Really, before I posted, I was thinking to myself to start a herculean beetle farm haha (with no market study ofc).

It is important to clarify first: When do you anticipate wanting to take the money out? Is this money you might need access to next month, or is it something you want to put away and forget about for a few decades? That helps focus your options.

Unfortunately, this suggestion will result in a net loss. While saving is always good advice, the approach presented here doesn't account for inflation. If the savings account grows at 1.x% with current inflation closer to 3%, this will slowly eat away at and evaporate his dollars.

It's a little bit like choosing to store your water in a container that's leaking slightly faster than new water is being put in. Yes, storing water is a hugely important idea, and SO much better than not storing water at all, but if you're losing water faster than you're gaining it then you should consider alternative storage containers that fill faster than they leak.

Similar with money, and this is why timeframe when the money needed is so critical. If he needs the money soon, then it's okay to lose a few percentages of that money to inflation. If he can ignore the money for years, then there are better options that will allow it to grow at a pace exceeding inflation.

Thank you for your answer. This is money that you don't necessarily need. Exactly to the point that you said, it feels stagnant to just save and leave it in a piggyback. This is money that is floating and even total loss due to a risky investment would not affect the survival of the individual. Although it would cause tears to shed.

Yes and the data show this social reason is related to religion.

I don't think you understand what  fertility is or you are not giving the right arguments for your case.

"Staying in a kneeling position (while praying for example) increases the chances of pregnancy due to ....." -  Would be a hypothetical example of BS that we are expecting.

You give religious believe as your argument which I guess is "not even wrong."
