  1. may i suggest considering some of the ideas used to detect rogue ocean waves. surely some of the formulas will be fun to work with. there is open source software that can assist this in using your wave.
  2. for psychosis, oxytocin is definitely beneficial. http://graduatestudents.ucmerced.edu/pcobb/files/Adj_OT_sxs_in_scz.pdf as far as for sociopathology, we need trials or studies to prove any possible effects. just to note, there is a possibility that men can grow breasts and or lactate, however they also have medicine that can be given to counteract such effects. the effects of oxytocin ARE permanent as far as we can tell. its introduction causes a significant change in cell density in specific areas of the brain.
  3. at least it makes for a good debate. it is nice to see that users are willing to tackle the issue.
  4. your opinions are dually noted as surely are mine. perhaps this argument is proof that objectivity goes hand in hand with good science.
  5. you cannot argue with a fool. only a fool does. you cannot force a person to take a better position. you can only change ignorance by ignoring it. those willing to overcome their personal limits will change. those who will not are left to find a site that caters more to what they want. note the difference in the way i used these words. every response in every thread can be read and the intent realized.
  6. there is a clear difference between bias and subjectivity. i have personally found that while many posters here can argue a point, they cannot be subjective. i haven't posted in some time because there is rarely reference beyond literal meaning. our posters learn to argue literal meaning but they do not exercise how to abstract. the result is pot shots and points. we end up looking like first year students. i hope this does not offend anyone, but it has to be said. i wish i could see more people who realize that being correct is not the only way to approach a situation. the smarter individual can lead a conversation in a way that is effective. sure its nice to be competitive and win, but who really needs someone who is never wrong.
  7. the reason why a god exists is to allow people religious freedom granted to them by the constitution. this is not a question for science but the humanities.
  8. yes, this is possible for short durations. however a body is required to have a complete system. a donor with his or her own head could in theory be connected to the secondary head with minimal compromise to the system extending its shelf life. there is of course the impact of blood type and etc... once the spinal cord and other systems are disconnected, there is no feasible way to reconnect the head (we just can't do it yet). if the objective is to replant the head in an artificial body, you would still not have a complete system and the brain would not last long even if we could connect to it. building a body that could take the place of the original one would be more expensive and complex than growing a new one. a dog was given two heads and of course detached from its body in the process. i believe they did this with a monkey also as far as the detached head goes. niether experiment lasted long. complications...
  9. it all boils down to power density. this has been achieved with lasers due to low loss. these were powerful lasers and a very small craft (size of tin can). what it boils down to: how well can you focus the transmission at variable distances how efficient is the antennae how much of the load do you lose due to atmospheric conditions lasers are a much more economical alternative but even they have problems with light scatter over long distances. this is the reason that you don't really see long distance laser weapons. they have a fairly short effective range and are vulnerable to weather conditions. i will not say that you cannot do it but i will say there will be loss in the system and it will be great. masers are getting much better. i wonder if this is a possibility to decrease some of the loss. a second laser could be used to probe the atmosphere and control adaptive optics for the maser but this is just speculation.
  10. you can measure these differences with an eeg. the emotive headset has this very ability. as far as controlling it, i believe you can to some degree by electrically stimulating the brain. reconstructing part of a movie is much more complex.
  11. i still remember the thrill of how simple a radio could be when i built my first crystal set. i may just have to build another just to remind myself about that first contact with science. what a wonderful feeling.
  12. as long as both sides are equal i'm game.
  13. would it be fair to say that something is better than nothing? better yet isn't it nice that we have a word that describes nothing. can nothing not exist=word salad this is better than a laser pointer and a cat.
  14. can i get an amen for one's compliment?
  15. well, while it may have been a pain in the butt, i think we should have done a bit more directly after the dissolution of the USSR. While it would have been quite a task to remove all of them, i think we should have used the support of other countries to remove at least some of the potential threat to the world.
  16. here is an honest attempt at deciding whether achohol or marijuana is worse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJJRVleE3_Q to note is that the guy comes to a reasonable conclusion that niether are good in excess but that you should consider the consequences when having fun. i still say that the stoned guy showed better handling of complex tasks. whether or not that equates to a safe diver is silly. neither are safe for driving as you can see a definite slower response time in both tests.
  17. yep... here is a website that may spark your interest. yes, this topic has come up time and time again. http://www.ilovephilosophy.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=166694 have fun...
  18. it is a fun topic to debate no? let me create another paradox. what happens if pinochio says my nose grows now. one has to take a step back and look at the big picture. go ahead and have fun. you will have solved world hunger, not realized it, and still not come up with an answer to nothing that satisfies everyone. it is literally an answer to nothing that you are looking for. lol... while it is imparative that one can argue a point, it is even more important to use higher reasoning to decide whether or not it is worth your time. hmm... yet i cannot shake the feeling that quantum mechanics is our best bet at answering the PARADOX. " i did not say that quantum mechanics is philosophy." as spoken with overt enunciation... groove on brother.
  19. turn that literal engine! you should have read my earlier responses. this is a lingual problem.
  20. i guess the question that stands out for me is whether or not a study can be done that compares more successful builds to our latest builds. while the complexities are different and may need different handling, i feel that such a study might reveal valuable clues within the data that may improve the over all management of such projects. after all, statistics is used to solve our greatest problems so why not put it to work for us where we are failing. perhaps a study on other high tech projects that have been effective. Consider the LHC. while it has been rather expensive, it is answering some of greatest questions mankind has to ask. pound for pound it delivered. this isn't just a big project - it is multi-national. perhaps we should ask our scientists to handle the aircraft affair. i still say that the oversight committee is named that way not because it has oversight but because there has been one already. gosh darn it, they went and labeled themselves and if that doesn't speak volumes i don't know what does. was that an oversight too? our government is broke and yet we rely on politicians expecting them to control our technology too. at this rate we will soon be back to flinstone cars and lobbing rocks at each other to communicate. penny gum will cost ten dollars by then (due to the evolving complexities of factory technologies, an oversight committe is needed).
  21. yea, i probably shouldn't have added to the drama.
  22. can nothing not exist? at the smallest scales that we can measure, nothing physically exists. even space itself is not a distinct entity. therefore nothing truly exists. by definition, nothing refers to the absence of something. it is a logical paradox. i would call upon the strangeness of quantum mechanics to try to find a reasonable solution. perhaps nothing is something yet is nothing at the same time. can we measure this phenomenon? i know that space is a vacuum filled with virtual particles popping in and out of existence. when it all boils down, it is proof that our perceptions are a result of insanity. it is a good thing that we can sometimes agree on some things.
  23. while i do not care to smoke myself i do feel that if alchohol can be bought then marijuana should be legal too. however, i do fell that "pinching"should be taxed. face it. if you taxed that then the government could get taxes several times on one purchase in many cases. i do think that marijuana has great medical uses which should be a viable option to the public. take schizophrenia and epilepsy for example. while the drug in its normal variety is a potential psychotropic with only one purpose, some new strains have the good stuff that acts as an anti- epileptic. this is an excellent alternative to the typical side effects of anti-psychotics and a god-send for controlling seiziures. think of sleep disorders and the dependancy issues involved with all those medications. this is not to mention all the other diseases that benefit from marijuana. i would like to bring up the costs of researching and developing new drugs that may not even be effective and often have terrible side effects like irritable bowels and sudden death. now compare that to the investment of breeding a new strain of pot... and compare the side effects. "well, you may get a bit stoned and that is unacceptable" think about how many pharmaceuticals are based on the opium plant. marijuana is illegal yet we cannot control synthetic pot... and that stuff is causing psychosis and strokes. heck the bath salts are not regulated and they are turning people into cannibals... to think it is ok to get drunk but not high is silly. you can litteraly kill yourself through alchohol poisoning. when was the last time you heard a true story about getting stonned to death. you just pass out. let the people as individuals decide if they want to sit on the couch for the rest of their lives. Darwin will prevail. alchohol is legal yet i do not drink either. Darwin will have to knock on someone else's door. AND i luagh heartily about all the politicians that are against it in public debates only to spend the night in a hotel with a few under aged hookers while snorting lines of coke and calling the wife to let her know it will be a late night again.
  24. sorry, i am talking about american airplanes of recent times. consider the f-22 and f-35. it was a political effort from the start and ended up like every other political situation. everybody shaking thier heads in disbelief and pointing fingers.
