What happens if I use Iron(III) sulphate as electrolyte with silver electrode and gold electrode? Can this be an electrolysis set-up? I guess Iron(II) sulphate and hydrogen gas are the product. By the way, how does a lithium cell work? why the standard reduction potential for 2H+(aq)+2e----> H2(g) is 0? That implies H+ is not reactive.

What is the most efficient way to create Hydrogen and Oxygen gas from the electrolysis of water? I have done much research on the internet in this area, though what scare information i found of any value came from basic science experiments done by elementary school children. This distressed me much, as I wish to try and find an effeicent way to electrolysize water into hydrogen and oxygen for an experiment I am conducting. My reasearch and limited knowlege on the subject has turned up several facts, the authenticity of which i cannot be 100% sure of. 1) Use of NaCl (table salt), Baking soda, or Sulfuric acid in an aqueous solution will increase production of e…

the other day i made some liquid CO2 by placing frozen CO2 into a tube and clamping each end and letting it sublime. Since iodine does sublimes would you be able to make liquid iodine. Because the only other way we see it is mixed with alchohol. Would it be possible to do? What could you do it in because i know its far more reactive then CO2.

THe purpose of this post is pure curiosity and isnt bad/dangerous in any way. When h2o2 is added to copper sulfate crystals it kinod starts to fizz. When heated a little bit with a lighter it reacts pretty violently. O2 gas is liberated i belive, and when they lighter held over the test tube it burns with a green tinge. what is this reaction? the left over is cuso4 crystals and blue liquid with possibly something else dissolved.

I am trying to understand the chemistry cell thoroughly. 1.If there is only a copper wire connected to a multimeter, there should be no voltage, isn't it? 2. For the set up of a zinc electrode and a copper electrode, will I get a larger voltage by changing the electrode? Such as a more concentrated one, or potassium nitrate instead of magnesium(II) nitrate. 3.Concerning the set-up in no.3, why electrons can be given up by zinc atoms? My idea: Zinc atom forms ions more readily in solution ( can it be pure water?) than contacted with copper wire. 4. Will there be any voltage if I use the zinc electrode instead copper electrode? So far, I am learning chemical cells, p…

Hi, a welder friend of mine gave me a thoriated tungsten tig electrode for my element collection. After a bit or research I found out that it is the one that contains 2% thorium, signified by the red band around the top. Although mildly radioactive, I'm thinking that it wouldn't be a good idea to store it near my bismuth and aluminium samples. Is this correct?

What is the difference between a Pile Lithium battery (non-rechargable, expensive and nice batterys you buy at the store) and a rechargable Lithium-ion battery such as the ones used in new advanced products liek cell phones? Do they both contain elemental Lithium in them. I know the non-rechargable ones have Li foil in them.

If I react KMnO4 with glycerin, the residue remaining will be mostly Mn2O3, correct? Like this... 14 KMnO4 + 4 C3H8O3 ---> 7 K2CO3 + 7 Mn2O3 + 5 CO2 + 16 H2O My question is, could I then replace the Mn with Mg to get Mn metal? I think this would work. This would be a type of thermite, correct? Mn2O3 + 3 Mg ---> 3 MgO + 2 Mn I'm interested in taking the classic KMnO4 + glycerin experiment further. That's why I'm thinking about doing this.

I've read online tutorials before about extracting sodium from rocksalt and salt...my question is, how do you melt the salt and what do you use...also...does the chlorine gas come out while you melt the salt or while you run the current through it? Is 12v 12amps enough? edit: I am using a car battery charger to supply the electricity...

...probably going to get my ass kicked but... I do have some native (ie as found in nature)osmiridium, or, as it is 'properly' called now "Ir-rich Osmium" for sale: Os 57.89% Ir 40.11% Pt 0.87% Ru .33% Rh .25% Fe 0.87% ...was the results of 5 analyses done by New Orleans Uni. I have even got individual mm-sized hexagonal xls of this stuff . It ain't cheap, and purified Johnson-Matthey stuff is a fraction of the price, but native stuff is rare. If anyone is interested, I can get you more info/prices. btw - I do NOT intend to solely use the forum for plugging sales, it is just that I am dispersing some of my element collection and this stuff (in its …

Anyone here did chemical equilibrium? I'm stuck on this question. Any help would be much appreciated. 1) for AgCl has a value of 1.8 x 10-10 at 25 degrees celsius, calculate whether or not 1 mg AgCl could dissolve in 1.0 L water. If Ksp AgCl (s) <----> Ag+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) Ksp = [Ag+] [Cl-] = [x] [x] = [x2] x2= 1.8 x 10^-8 [x] = 1.34x10^-5 mol/l = 143g/mol = 0.0018g/L ?????? 2) Although the solubility of AgCl is extremely low in pure water, it is even lower in a 0.1M solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) due to the ‘common- ion effect’. Briefly explain this observation.

I was wondering what causes KMnO4 to stain skin so horribly. I was making saturated solutions of oxidizers to dip cotton string into to see how strong each oxidizers where (and just for the hell of it) to make fuses. Although nothing faces up to black powder rolled in tissue paper. I always get lightly stained by potassium permanganate and try to avoid it, but this saturated solution was so crazy, the second it hits skin it leaves brown marks, even if contact is for even a second, its very quick. I dipped a bit of steal wool in the solution to see how fast it would burn when dry. I put the steal wool on a firebrick and set it on the ground in the sun to dry. About 10 minu…

I noticed that a drop of KOH solution added to iodine solution (iodine tincture and iodine+ethanol) casues it to completelly lose color. I had a iodine stain in the bathroom, and when i added 1 drop of KOH to it it almost instantly disapered and became a perfectly clean countertop. does anyone kno the reaction or wats goin on here?

this one`s just for the few that like to see things with their own eyes. I had a sulphuric acid excess from a prior synth, I figured I`de got enough of most sulphates so I`de make some FeSO4.7h2O to top up a chem that I don`t use much in the lab but in the gardens as a Moss killer. the 150ml of 50% H2SO4 went in a 250ml conical flask with some "ancient" rusty old screws. I left it on the heater overnight and next morning, still fizzining away happily were what looked like pins in a green soln with "black stuff" floating on the top, that was then filtered off and tested, yes, it had managed to take the Carbon out of Carbon Steel, and left it floating around th…

Hi, ummm firstly, is it magnesium sulfate, or sulphate? anyways. Now this may sound like a suspicious pyrotechnic question, but i assure you its not... ok well it is. I was searching through the internet for a smoke bomb, and came across two recipes, one using potassium nitrate and one using magnesium sulfate. Both were added to sugar and burnt. So my question is this: can anhydrous magnesium sulfate be used as an oxidiser? is it possible for mgso4 to donate oxygen to the reaction, just like kno3? after all, both contain oxygen. thanx,
