Can anyone explain how EDTA is used for titration? I read somewhere that EDTA reacts with metal ions and color of erichrome black indicator changes when there is no free EDTA any more. Right? Are there other indicators that can be used for titration with EDTA? Is there way to tell by such titration what metal ions those were that reacted with EDTA?

    1) how many moles of h2 gas should be taken up by 1 octene in the courseof this reaction? CH3-(CH2)5-CH=CH2 -> (H2PtCl6) -> NaBH4, C2H5OH, HCL -> CH3-(CH2)5-CH2-CH3 Answer is 2 right??? 2) What volume does this correspond to at STP? How can i solve this part? 3) how many moles of molecular hydrogen are consumed per mole of the precatalyst (H2PtCl6) in order to convert it enterily to platinum metal? Isnt this 2 also?? what is the diff between this and the moles of H2 gas for the question #1? 4) How many moles of precataylst (H2PtCl6) are used in this reaction? Again is isn't this 2?? My answers don't seem right and i …

ok, well here is the exact details of the problem: which fatty acid melts at the highest temperature (solid to liquid) (order from lowest to highest temp required to melt) Don't know how to draw on here, so i will just explain it to you 1) a 17 long hydrocarbon chain with a Carboxyl group attached at the end. Has no double bond 2) a 17 long hydrocarbon chain with a Carboxyl group attached at the end. Has 1 double bond 3) a 17 long hydrocarbon chain with a Carboxyl group attached at the end. Has 2 double bonds. My guess is that 1 requires least and 3 requires most temperature

Can K2Cr2O7 oxidize salicylic acid? I'm studying chemistry lab and I've done the experiment and the result show that it can't but I'm not sure. The others phenolic compound that I have tested show positive result, for example , alpha-naphthol. Why can't salicylic be oxidized? Please explain. Thanks for your reply.

Time to put the pencil to the paper. There may be a great deal of cash in it for you if a solution is reached. There is a large Corporation in America that emits excess amounts of CO2 into the atmos each day. If someone could figure out a way to fuse the Carbon Dioxide molecules with another element that could be used as a fuel in any way, saving the environment, and saving this company money, let me know! I have been at it all day, but maybe I'm not thinking along the right lines... I know some of you stoich for fun, and that's who I'm looking for to reach a solution. Keep in mind, anything goes- we'll narrow things down as the company sees fit.

I'm currently running methanol at temperatures below zero (-30°C). And when I went and checked the reservoir for the methanol I found some white residue on the metal (aluminium) and it had eaten through some plastic. Now is this normal methanol behaviour? The methanol is mixed with water. I won't go into detail about what the system is being used for.

What chemical or chemicals, on contact with blood, instantly explodes? This explosion doesn't have to kill them, it just has to go boom. I'm writing a science fiction story about an alchemist/knight during the Middle Ages who put something on his sword so when he goes into battle, people who he slices explode.

I need a wax to soften a mixture of 2 parts of rosin and 1 part of beeswax. The rosin is 'bow rosin', used by violinists, and the beeswax is refined, white beeswax. The beeswax and rosin were melted together, but froze into a mixture with a rock-candy texture. I would rather avoid using oils or solvents to lower the melting point, and to soften the mixture, and hope that another wax could be suggested to add to the rosin and beeswax. Thanks for your advice.

Right, this has been annoying me lately. In every chemistry textbook or website that covers optical isomerism, you'll find the same thing. A little paragraph explaining chirality, usually acoompanied by an explanation using hands, mirror images but not superimposable etc. The other section you'll see is how you can tell one enantiomer from another; by shining plane polarized light through them. One enantiomer rotates the plane through a certain angle, the other enantiomer through the same angle but in the opposite direction. This is all fair enough, but what I cant find anywhere is WHY? What is it about a certain arrangment of atoms that can rotate the plane of polar…

Can anyone explain to me how exactly EDTA forms 1:1 complexes with any metal ion despite their charge?? I know that it forms a ring with the metal cation, but I can't seem to figure out how something with a Charge of 4- only reacts once with a metal cation no matter its charge. Can someone please enlighten me???

the protocol: Vg = volume not accessable to solvent (volume of the gel matrix) Vg cannot be measured directly. However, it should apparant that: Vg = Vt - volume accessable to solvent We can measure the volume accessable to the solvent, using a small molecule such as acetone which can be easily visualized by a UV detector. example: Pharmacia Superose 6 column - volume accessable to solvent = 19.5 mL (measured with acetone) Vg = Vt - 19.5 mL = 24.4 - 19.5 mL = 4.9 mL --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hi guys! i just find this calculation very unreasonable, since as we know Vt=Vi+Vg+Vo, where…

I'm not sure whether this question belongs on a Chemistry forum or a Biology forum. But, their are a lot of molecules that make up our body. Loads of H-O and C-H bonds. There is a certain amount of enthalphy (ΔH°*) for destroying (endothermic) and creating (exothermic) bonds. So what is my queston? This is impossible, of course, but say for some reason, every bond in the human body split into atoms, or radicals, or to but it another way, what if a bunch of atoms spontaneously formed bonds in such a way as to create a perfectly functioning human body: By considering the Bond Energys: http://www.cem.msu.edu/~reusch/OrgPage/bndenrgy.htm What do you think would be …

A strange occurence happened at my dads work and we can't figure it out. Hurricane Ivan completely flooded the basement (about 10 feet of water). They have a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol and water in a 200 gallon tank which was set at 35 degrees F and was used for circulating through condensors. It had a 1 1/2" closed cell insulation lid which had lifted as the water rose, exposing it to the muddy water pouring in the building. 2 days later when the basement drained, he and his workers were amazed to find that the exposed tank was exactly in tact, not a speck of muddy water in it. It stayed just the way it was before the flooding. Can anyone explain this?
