AOL Instant Messenger (4.8.2790, probably other versions as well) reads files in the Internet Explorer cache that are not related to content used within the program. This can be verified by Windows error messages when files become corrupted and AIM attempts to read them.

Is there a MicroSoft or 3rd party plugin that lets you view PPS presentations without having to have PowerPoint installed, or is it an all or nothing program? I have some PPSs to view and can't be arsed going through that dumb Office 2000 premium set-up crap. (I really don't see the point of Powerpoint to be honest - what with HTML being slightly more versatile, but there's no accounting for business minds is there?)

A virus is being spread that arrives as a confirmation E-mail from E-Bay saying your order was received on something you didn't order and it has directions for you to question the order and fix the problem. E-Bay is working on it. My cousin received one in CA. and has been in contact with E-Bay about the problem. If you didn't order it. Don't open the E-mail Just aman

For the past years people have been seeing 64-bit processors coming to life for servers, and for some workstations. To shorten this ALOT, let me throw some quotes in from the article. "The move to 64 bits won't be like previous upgrades, where the chipmakers bent over backwards to ensure compatibility with older hardware and software. Intel's 64-bit CPU, called Itanium, is an entirely new chip that has no compatibility with the x86 line of chips that carried it from the 8086 chip in 1981 to the Pentium IV. It's designed only for high-end servers, and Intel (INTC) has no plans as yet to bring 64-bit computing to the masses" "AMD (AMD), on the other hand, has …

I really really like to teach and help people use technology. What career options do I have? What would you suggest? However I heard tech training careers aren't respected and aren't paid much. Also your not always on the leading edge of technology?

Visual Basic is a lot like Delphi, except for the syntax is different. Other than, it's all pretty much the same. You can download a trial version of Delphi, at www.borland.com. Lets look at a few examples... Comments are the easiest thing in the world to accomplish. Visual Basic: ' Your comment goes here. Delphi: // Your comment goes here. That's not hard to follow, moving on. When declaring a varible in VB, you use the Dim statement, followed by the variable name, and then the data type. Visual Basic: Dim intVar As Integer, strVar As String Delphi: var intVar: Integer, strVar: String; Simple enough, right? Notice the semi…

A new discovery implying to be a new "last resort" to security defenses on government computer systems and really important servers. The quote below is from Oracle Magazine "Those wishing to see a pilfered peripheral taken dead rather than alive may be encouraged by the work of a team of chemists at University Of California, San Diego. Researchers have created computer chips that can ruin the circuitry in anything from a spy plane to a cell phone. It involves applying an oxidizing chemical alled gadolinium nitrate to a permeable silicon chip. When an appropriate electric charge is applyed to the chemical--a detonation command sent to a laptop computer, for example…

Fortran? I use fortran, and I'm 14. I like it because it's like basic, but has more power to it, especially pointers (Fortran90), I dont know Fortran-77 or anything, just Fortran-IV, the one that they said set ANSI standard, (which all versions claim) I stopped using fortran because I wanted to make more complex programs. As you should know fortran is horrible for extremely complex programs, and becomes hard to maintain after awhile.

  14. I was just wondering if anyone uses VB for traditional batch data processing. We have been experimenting with it, and it isn't going over well. No doubt that it is not the best language for this type of processing, but they won't embrace anything else either. It pits the traditional big iron people against the geeks who don't bathe, IMO. If anyone can give me examples of how it can be better than say COBOL, or can give me examples of why I should argue against it, I'd appreciate it. I'm not anti-VB, I just don't see any use for it in batch processing.

  15. First, my question involves transferring packed-decimal data via ftp from a mainframe (EBCDIC) to a Unix platform (HP I believe). The Eunuchs claim that they can neither read or convert the data into a decimal format. I have to convert it to text for them. Are they right? Or are they just lazy or stupid?

A portion of my Java project says: void getCommand() reads in a line of input and sets up a StringTokenizer Object to parse it later. boolean hasTokens() returns true if the tokenizer Object is not null and still has more tokens, false otherwise. String getToken() returns the next token of the tokenizer. These methods are all in the same class. getCommand(), has no parameters and a void return-type -- getCommand sets up a StringTokenizer called tokenizer. Now, hasTokens() from the same class, also without any parameters, is supposed to determine if the tokenizer I set up in getCommand() hasMoreTokens. Is it even possible to somehow call getComm…
