Can someone please explain in simple language and in step by step terms how to tackle a problem like this? I have to answer a question that is very similar to this. (Only the numbers have been changed). But I haven't got a clue where to start. At a guess my instinct is to find a way to convert these numbers into the same or similar units? I have of course used different numbers here and I am not trying to cheat or anything (it's just a practice question anyway), as I really would like to understand how to do this. But my maths isn't strong (I'm an adult learner BTW), so I would appreciate as simple and clear a breakdown of this problem as possible. …

  6. I came across an article of a doomsday theory regarding the BP oil spill: http://www.helium.com/items/1882339-doomsday-how-bp-gulf-disaster-may-have-triggered-a-world-killing-event Of course, this article may not be entirely true as it is very far fetched in nature, but it made me wonder how the BP's operations have affected the general population around the world. For instance, what did the event cost us financially and environmentally? How do these events relate to the everyday person? How did this affect our future?

I have come across the following paragraph on drilling of oil wells in a book: Natural gas is found above petroleum, trapped between the rock cap and the petroleum layer. With the help of giant rigs, a hole is drilled in the earth's crust. When the hole reaches the rock cap, the natural gas comes out first with a great pressure. After that, petroleum starts flowing out due to the pressure of natural gas. When the pressure falls further, the petroleum is pumped out by electric motors. What does the line petroleum starts flowing out due to the pressure of natural gas mean here? After the natural gas comes out with great pressure, petroleum beneath the natural gas fl…

I'm looking to purchase a polarizing microscope on a small budget, and I've realistically narrowed my options to the two little-known (and probably Chinese made) brands of Variscope and Amscope. There is a helpful discussion on Amscope in microbiology and immunology forum in this webpage, but nobody has mentioned variscope yet. Does anyone here have (or know someone who has) experience using or owning a Variscope? Are they any good? I'm a bit weary because as the old saying goes, "if it sounds too good to be true ir probably isn't." But, unless anyone here knows where I can find a functional binocular or trinocular polarizing scope with an analyzer/rotating stage…

  11. A recent true story. On a warm, humid summer day, I walked into an air conditioned store and stayed for several minutes. I assume my eyeglass lens temp stabilized at the temp of the store's A/C'd air. As I left the store, my glasses "fogged up" until the outside air warmed them a bit. I went home, looked up the weather on the Internet and found that the outside temp was 82° and the dewpoint was 73°. Should I interpret my experience to mean that the A/C'd air in the store was at or below 73°?

  12. Hello to everyone reading this post I have a very simple question about gravity. We have seen planes flying at altitudes of around 35,000 ft. So if a plane takes of from Hongkong it will land in spain more quickly. And it will take more time if it travels form spain to hongkong. This is bcoz of the rotation of the earth from east to west. SO My question is if i happen to lift myself up in space by about say 2ft, will the earth pass by and say within a few hours spain will arrive automatically due to the rotation of the earth form east to west . And then i can land on the earth. so why use planes in a east to west travel..... or is there anything else.

First of all, I can't imagine why it took so long to develop a solution which appears to be so absolutely effective. Not knowing the details of how a blowout preventer is designed, most could only guess in the dark about how a potential solution would develop, not knowing that pieces of it at the outlet were removable. Just have a hard time understanding why so much time and resources were wasted and why so much oil flowed out while they used such ineffective ideas when such brilliance was there all along. Surely, there are plenty of factors that I would have no idea about. I have read about how the Ixtoc slick, slightly bigger?, the gulf recovered from in only 2…

The Quran on Seas and Rivers: Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity, and density.1 For example, Mediterranean sea water is warm, saline, and less dense, compared to Atlantic ocean water. When Mediterranean sea water enters the Atlantic over the Gibraltar sill, it moves several hundred kilometers into the Atlantic at a depth of about 1000 meters with its own warm, saline, and less dense characteristics. The Mediterranean water stabilizes at this depth2 (see figure 13). Figure 13: The Mediterran…

Hey all, new member here with his first topic. I saw this one article on the Web that made me a tad concerned. http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/07/12/doomsday-could-bp-spill-kill-all-life-on-earth/ Is there any validity to that? Theres also another article within that, which debunks the theory. Theres a link to it in the article posted above but I can post it here if you can find it. Cheers. -Navalius

I haven't really seen a thread specific to this yet, but I've been reading a lot of speculation about the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull which recently erupted and severely disrupted European air travel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_eruptions_of_Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull Specifically, I've read that Eyjafjallajökull sits next to a larger volcano named Katla, that has always erupted after Eyjafjallajökull erupted. If so, this could mean prolonged disruptions to European air travel. Oh yeah, by the way... here's a photo:

  24. Starting this month I will be doing monthly analyses on seismic activity and solar activity. It is up to others to determine if solar activity is causation of seismic activity or coincidence. Just remember energy is neither created nor destroyed but it is simply converted from one form to another. My goal is to have seismic activity divided by each tectonic plate, however I am only one person and it's to much work to do all by myself. If anyone wants to contribute to this research, go on ahead. So, i was thinking about the oil spill they've got offsore on the states and i started thinking: Surely its possible for an oil resovoir to spring a leak under natural circumstances. for instance, a fault line, erosion(not to sure how much of an effect this has on the sea floor). Okay, I'll admit i'm not to sure on the mechanism, but I do know that oilwells can experience geological activity and there are a couple of exploited resovoirs which are on fault lines. So, are there any known natural oil spills? As in not a direct or indirect result of human activity. no pipes drilling or tanks involved.
