Advice needed urgently!

I have an opportunity to learn anything about computer software development, computer programming on any language, database management systems, etc.

I'm a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, I'm majoring in Electronic & Computer Engineering as a branch under my field.

I need something to learn and know and do within a duration of 6months. Something that'll make me certified in its aspects and also make me saleable amongst my counterparts.

The financial and material resources to learn such a computer program wouldn't be a problem.

I want to make a huge leep and make myself more desirable to companies than my peers; a reason to fill my CV a reason to be happy, a reason to be more employable.

I'm from a country where the chances of employment is close to minimum.

Advise me please!

I don't want to go into entrepreneur. It's the order of the day over here. Becoming a software engineer is my dream.

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder what I'll be securing. Another man's software?

Yeah people like to make websites to advertise what they want to sell. Most people don't have skills in website development so they hire people to write the software for them. You could have a bank that wants to keep track of money. They can't lose numbers so all their information has to be backed up. Did you look at the jobs websites for what the employers are looking for in their workers. Generally they will provide a list of skills. Now if I was in Nigeria at the moment I would be looking at electronic waste recycling. There is a lot of money to be made from e-waste recycling but it has to be done in a manner that isn't dangerous for people's health. Many places burn e-waste but e-waste has toxic chemicals like lead which can make you sick if you breathe them in. Some places use incinerators (big chimneys) to burn e-waste but it has been shown that some chemicals are still leaking into the air increasing rates of cancer in the surrounding area. So more needs to be done with treating the smoke from these incinerators in order to filter the air coming out of them. It is possible to filter lead a zinc from the smoke http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0304386X00000736

6 months?

It's way too small amount of time to learn anything to be ready.. Unless you will be doing it at home 14h/d, writing projects for yourself the whole day.

Do you already know C,C++,C# .NET Framework,Java,JavaScript,PHP,anything?

The financial and material resources to learn such a computer program wouldn't be a problem.

Buy C,C++ book (or use C/C++ on-line learning materials),

download and install free Visual Studio Express from MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express

and start writing. At the beginning book will have some examples (typically taking arguments from console and output to console, such tools are now obsolete, now matter GUI).

Something that you would use by yourself.

For instance make math calculator as project.

Make GUI in GUI builder, learn how to attach code to execute after user clicked and interacted with common controls (button, text, listview, progress bar etc.),

One such project a day, in 6 months you will have 180 apps, and plentiful of experience, with code that you can actually show.

Electronics engineer should be familiar with robotics, so get arduino uno starter kit.

f.e.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Ultimate-UNO-R3-Starter-Kit-for-Arduino-1602-LCD-Servo-Motor-Relay-RTC-LED-/221451495178

You will have to join electronic circuit knowledge with a bit of programing.

After weeks you will have enough knowledge for f.e. making led advertising boards with programmable and animated content.

And sell or lend them to f.e. shop owners directly.

I'm from a country where the chances of employment is close to minimum.

Computer programmer can work anywhere,

as you just need good English (already you have),

computer or laptop, permanent Internet connection,

and PayPal account to receive money from your clients.

Google for "freelance programmer"

What is your country?

  • 4 weeks later...

From what I understand, most money is made from developing database management software that is both fast and secure. I worked on a couple of projects for people that required this. Companies are in high demand for this, especially with all the hacking sprees occurring. Knowing about network security would be something to look forward to.
