freakJoe
Hi, how it is with fern at home? my mum already had lot of them but they are usually dying after about half year... i had one as well, and no matter if i water it a lot, or very rarely, after some time its leaves are getting brown and it is dry... even if ground is wet... i tried to optimize conditions, but why is that? how to water it and keep it in a good condition for a long time? Thanks!

StringJunky
If you think about the structure of the leaves, you can see that they are adapted to absorbing and transpiring moisture very efficiently. I think they thrive under shady conditions, little direct sunlight, like under coolish tree canopies. The soil wants to have good drainage properties. Compost, coarse sand and vermiculite mixture would help to avoid drowning the ferns roots when watered. The root environment wants to be most, cool and airy. Some info from the pros - I wasn't far off: http://www.fernnursery.co.uk/plant.htm I think they are adapted to areas where the essential resources, like water, sunlight, nutrients and temperature are restricted. I would try mimicking those conditions. Edited March 20, 2016 by StringJunky
