Chlorine gas

I have tried electrolising saturated NaCl solution using graphite electrodes where i collected gas at both electrodes. I was expecting green at the anode: a clear gas was produced. Thinking that I had some oxygen I took sniff of it and it stung my nose with a strong chlorine smell.

Is the chlorine forming HCl before it makes it to the collector?

What is the smelly, colourless gas produced at the anode? (I noticed a slight whitish wispy vapour/gas coming from the solution)

How can I make chlorine gas without using MnO2 + HCL or molten NaCl? according to WebElements it can be produced by electrolysing brine.

Thanks for any help.

I am not a nazi or anything, I just wan't to experiment and learn, I was planning on turning the power off once a little was produced, and then maybe reacting it with something like copper or calcium to make it less dangerous. I wan't going to leave it lurking in my bedroom!

you`re on the right track for making small amounts of chlorine :)

and the "it stung my nose" bit was most certainly chlorine gas!

as for reacting it later, you wouldn`t really notice much of anything happen with copper, if the Calcium you mention is in the form of the element (it`s a metal) then you`ll certainly see it react :)

if you want a load of chlorine, buy a cheap bottle of toilet bleach, empty half of it out and then add an acid into the bottle, you`ll get a litre or 2 of pure chlorine gas without a problem :)

do it outside though, and stay upwind of it, as it`ll knock you on your ass if you get a lungfull!

citric or tartaric acid (available at most chemists or wine making shops) will be just fine for the acid to use, but be carefull, it`s nearly invisible, and rather nasty if not controlled :)

never tried it, but I see no reason it shouldn`t, give it a try, let me know :)

[edit] don`t bother, I just tried it, it does work, but it`s a very poor result, the bleach is 5% and so`s the vinigar. you`ll need to shake or heat the vessel to get a significant amount, and even then the Chlorine is a little contaminated due to the vapor pressure of the acetic acid, it`s still good enough to make you choke if you take a good sniff though! LOL :)

you could distill it sure, vingar has a boiling point of roughly 413 kelvin wereas water boils at 373 K. but freezing doesn`t smell as much :)

water freezes at 273 k and acetic acid at about 200k, not many freezers do -73 Celcius and there`s alot less washing up to do after :)

The improvement where anolyte containing an aqueous solution of sodium chloride is provided with a concentration by weight of sodium chloride of less than 200 g/l, and the water humidifying the gas containing oxygen is provided sole in the form of water vapour, and maintaining reaction conditions so as to obtain a concentration by weight of sodium hydroxide between the cation-exchange membrane and the cathode of less than 38.8%, which is not bad.

YT2095 said in NEVER to use Nitric acid! nitrogen chlorides and or chlorates are unstable and extremely expolosive!  [/b]

hmmm.... i wonder what happens when i light THIS!!

lol. Thanx for the warning. Don't worry, im not going to blow up my house!

he wants to know how to make them, most likely

AND! I will point out that anyone trying this is NEVER to use Nitric acid! nitrogen chlorides and or chlorates are unstable and extremely expolosive!

*sneaks off with a bottle of bleach and a flask of nitric acid*

...where do you live again YT? you and your breathing apparatus

In my hometown of Pullman Washington, (Wash State Univ) our Parks and Rec dept is overrun by brain dead students who get put in charge of filling the city swimming pool. Every few years, they manage to break the chlorine line and evacuate the neighborhood around it, always managing to kill a couple pets and a kid in the park surrounding the pool. I don't think I'd mess with chlorine after going through that every couple of years.

Anyone know the freezing point and liquid point of Neon? That came up the other day and Im too lazy to google it
