Does anyone know why sunlight affects meristem/stem growth in trees?

The answer is in spring time and Autumn ;). Think of why trees loose leaves and why growers of certain ' herbs' tweak light cycles

No sunlight = No ATP = No Metabolism = no cell division = no growth

Yeah they also grow towards light.

 

Yes they do indeed! A phenomenon we call Heliotropism.
