Number Sequence

Featured Replies

32, 81, 64, 25... Whats the next number?

This should be really easy for most people here. I'm only posting it because it hasn't been solved at my school by anybody besides me and I wanted to gauge how hard it actually is. My school is pretty mathematically and scientifically deficient.

Please post how long it took you.

6...a little more than a minute.

It was the 32 that threw me off a bit.

Yea, 32 is a number most people associate with 4 or 8, but not 5. It took me about 30 secs I think.

yeah, six. took me a minute or two. the 32 is deffinately the trick

I saw the answer, so it was easy after that. natural inclination is to think of one variable at first.

Seen things like it before. A few seconds.

guess i'm not smart enough, but would still like to find out how???

xy,(x+1)(y-1),(x+2)(y-2),...

This particular sequence happens to start at the point (2,5).

oh my gosh it's not only 32, EVERY NUMBER is tricky here. Because...who would come up with things like that!?

Ya I didn't get it either. I was totally stumped. What grade are all you guys in?

senior (asking what math class might yield more important information)

Ha!

that's a good one.

I only got as far as the squared part.

that is really a good one.

Ah well. I am only in grade 9.

I'm only in 9th as well. I really like this problem. I think it's one of those where you either have it in a minute or two or you'll never get it.

I'll have to agree with that. Some pretty bad spelling too. Rather interesting though, obviously some primary research into the eating habits of snails.

it's not exactly a brain teaser though!

maybe we have to figure out why she was so dumb to put it here in the first place!!!
