Gain

Featured Replies

Ive got an electronics exam in the morning, can somebody explain to me the meaning of 'gain', in terms of transistors?

oh i see, thanks

wasnt on the test, but useful anyway

  • 2 weeks later...

old thread, but the answer is still valid!

transistors are current amplifiers, the amplification is known as the gain, the gain of the transistor is calculated using the equation:

gain = collector current / base current

so techincally it really isnt that much to do with the Transitor then, it is more to do with the PD over the Collector/ Emmiter.

btw how did u find this thread?

its to do with current... PD = potential difference = voltage

gain is to do with current.

i saw it in a book earlier and remember this thread!

sorry, the current then. E.g. if there (potentially) is a large current runnign through the C/E when a current goes through the Base, that is more of a factor, than the type (providing its not FET or PNP)
