pH prediction

Featured Replies

Predict whether an aqueous solution of each salt produces a solution with a pH >7, <7, or = 7. If the pH >7 or <7, write an equation that justifies your prediction. SALT: AlCl3, K3PO4, Na2SO4, Ca(CH3CO2)2:doh:

I got this:

AlCl3 pH=7 AlCL3 + H2O ----> AlOH^- + H^+

K3PO4 pH>7 K3PO4 + H2O -----> HPO4 + OH^-

Na2SO4 pH>7 Na2SO4 + H2O ----> HSO4 + OH^-

Ca(CH3CO2)2 pH>7 Ca(CH3CO2)2 + H2O -----> CH3CO2 + OH^-

Oh my...

The numbers are driving me crazy.

Are you supposed to derive the no. of hydrogen atoms, taking it over a unit volume and multiplying it by a negative logarithm?

Alkalies and acids when mixed together form a neutral salt, right? That is pH7.

Oh yeah, sorry for diverting from the topic. You're on the right track anyway.
