It depends on the country and what type of connection you are using, the traditional GSM frequencies can be found here:

These are the UMTS/HSPDA frequencies for broadband enabled phones. GSM can only handle voice, text and the original text based internet service as it has insufficient data bandwidth for transferring movies and images.
