Holography is a type of data recording technique used, primarily for image recording. Holography is so famous because it can record the image in 3 dimensional wise. Also it's also proven to have higher capacity than conventional storage method. You'll most likely to find it in your ID card, where a logo is imprinted on your card.

Holography was discovered in 1947 by Hungarian physicist Dennis Gabor (1900–1979) work for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971.

The theory behind holography is the interference of light. A monochromatic light is split into 2 equal and coherent beam by mean of a beam splitter, which one of these beam is shone on the object. The lights scattered by the object will be collected on the recording medium, which is our hologram, while the other beam will be scattered by a diverging lens and directed to the hologram. Interference of these 2 lights will create a hologram of different intensity, based on the information carried by the first light. These different intensity appears to our naked eye as a 3D-liked object on a 2D medium.

Based on the diagram above, a laser is focus by a shutter and split using a beam splitter. The usage of a diverging lens is to scatter the light so that it can be recorded as a whole in hologram.

Recent advancement of this technology has been used on digital disc recording, this type of disc is called optical disc and believed to have a minimum storage of 500GB. Also, the cost to produce such disc is much lower than conventional DVD or Blu-Ray, making holography technique a boost in information technology field.
