Spyware...

Featured Replies

Nobody has actually said "hey I get X viruses"' date=' so I don't know what you're talking about.

I [b']don't[/b] get viruses. That's not because I don't know they're there, it's because I know how to recognise and avoid them, and if they do get on they last less than a millisecond because I am well-defended.

I go to whatever I want on the net, I have no active antivirus or spyware and I dont get any problems.I dont really pay much attention to ther latest worm/trojan/virus on the news.I didnt do anything for the sasser.

Then what is "too late"?

I meant that was to late but I did it anyway.Even though I have no viruses.

A PC acting as a central Unix hub for a LAN, running hardware and software firewalls.

Whats the point of having one of those?

Man, I wish i could relax like you do!

I have 10000 files scanned and no viruses so far. This is going to take a while though I have at least 200000 files to scan. :-(

well, I think that instead of the computer needing to run the software, the hub does it, saving RAM space!

The most common routes of infection are worms transmitting themselves via open ports (hence the need for a firewall to close those ports off), or infected mail.

There are viruses now that don't even need to be previewed to be able to launch themselves from clients like Outlook Express (which, incidentally, is the biggest piece of vulnerable crap in the universe).

Nice positive thoughts sayonara!

I only recieve e-mail very rarely from my family I dont have any junk or spam ever nor do I use outlook express.

All requests to the net have to pass through the gateway, which allows the gateway to check for blacklisted DNS entries and refuse known malservices.

Likewise all incoming traffic is routed through the hub, so nothing bad can get on to the network.

Also, like aom said, it frees up resources on the LAN terminals.

Hmm that makes sense but I think I have enough ram to go around.I have got to get a sound card though.I have too much RAM wasted.

I think we might be getting to the bottom of your blessed existence.

I have no need for that.If it wasnt for this web site I wouldnt even be on the internet.

Thats because IM THE KING OF VIRUS FREE COMPUTERS!

20000 files done.

Even though you have RAM to go around, your computer performs better without it running :)

If you just have 1 PC, there's no point trying to make a LAN.

We have 6 PCs in this household you see. Plus one autonomous Freevo. So sharing the same DSL connection and sharing files etc means making a LAN, and the most effective way to do that for us is through a gateway.

The fog thickens, how many people do you have in that house? ;)

Without what running?

yup! without the firewall!

So my computer does better without a firewall?

Then thats good.

3.

We realllly like computers.

Yeah, but not taking into account that virsuses can enter and use up all the RAM!

Then thats good.

Only in the same sense that it runs better with any 1 program turned off.

It's a payoff between performance and security.

Id rather have performance other than security any day.Mainly because of my safe habits. :D
