Acid

Why do chemists name HCI(aq) the formula as hydrochloric acid,

but not name it as H2O+HCI = hydrochloric acid????

Chemical Formula don't have a plus (+) sign in them. What you have shown us

H2O+HCI = hydrochloric acid
is a reaction

This forms HCL(aq), the formula of hydrochloric acid

Is that clear?

things in brakets () usualy show the state of the chem, (s) solid (l) liquid (g) gas and (aq) aqueous in water :)

But, if hydrochloric acid react with something else , what should the formula of the raw material ( hydrochloric acid , HCI or HCI+H2O?)???

If it is hydrochoric acid dissolved water, then it is H2O(aq). This is because being water influences the reaction.

If it is hydrochoric acid dissolved water, then it is H2O(aq).

eh, i think you mean "If it is hydrochoric acid dissolved water, then it is HCl(aq)."

Acids aren't acids if they aren't in water, they have to be aqueous to be acidic

HCI? Hydrogen carbon iodide??

i think he just made a mistake in writing the formula. HCI wouldn't be a stable compound... i'm not even sure it would dissociate.

Well, what Ithink happened, the formula is written as HCl. The l at the end of the formula looks like a capital I, therefore, making cheungcheung think it was an I!

Well that would sure explain his question of why "HCI" was called hydrochloric acid :P

:). Well, if you are willing to accept people from other countries posting on the forums, you will just have to tolerate small speeling mistakes. All that patters here is that we understand what others are trying to ask! :P

HCl is Hydrogen Chloride. HCl(aq) is Hydrochloric Acid :)
