3x^2-5y^2+4x+y-10=0 is this an hyperbola?

Featured Replies

hello could you tell me if 3x^2-5y^2+4x+y-10=0 is this equation describing an hyperbola?

and what about Y^2 = -6x^2+36 is this an ellipse?

thank you.

nop, i don't have idea where to begin, blike could you tell me what conic sections those equations describe?

thank you.

Hyperbola have the general equation of [math]\frac{x^2}{a^2}- \frac{y^2}{b^2}=1[/math] OR [math]\frac{y^2}{b^2}- \frac {x^2}{a^2}=1[/math], while an ellispie have the general equation of [math]\frac{x^2}{a^2}+ \frac{y^2}{b^2}=1[/math].

try grouping the x's and the y's together, then thin about what you could do to get it into the form.

(x-h)^2/a^2 - (Y-k)^2/b^2

and what kind of conic do you believe that one is?
