How might the difference in the brightness of spectral lines be explained?

 

Please please anyone help me...i have a lab and this is a question that i cannot find anywhere please help

in addition to what swansont said, if you have overlapping(a mixture of elements) spectral lines this can also increase the brightness.

Does anyone know where can I find some information about s,p,d,f lines (sharp,diffuse...),how did scientists explain them,and how they found out they were wrong? :eek:
