Why, how come, the democracy of an individual state differs its democracy from the United States democracy ?  Each state elects their governor (State president with another name?)  by popular vote instead of an electoral -county?- votes if the United States is united' ?  😦

It was one of many compromises.

Some wanted President chosen via a more Parliament style system, others wanted a popular vote.

United is meant more in the sense that the individual States each with their own Constitution and everything, are all in a Union together.
