  1. If abiogenesis is a true theory about how life on Earth started from nonlife then this means that life is a form of chemistry or is it?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiogenesis

Whether or not abiogenesis is "a true theory" life is a form of chemistry. What is your alternative suggestion as to what it is, given that living organisms are composed of chemicals that are engaged in a complex web of chemical reactions.

  2. Significant rioting occurred at HMP Birmingham (England) on Friday 16th December 2016. The Prison Officers Association has described the disturbance as the worst since the Strangeways Riots of April 1990.

The Strangeways Riots had started the day before the Bishops Castle Earthquake, one of the highest magnitude earthquakes of the 20th Century.

The purpose of this post is that I wish to go on record as stating that there is a significant possibility of an Earthquake beneath the land area of England and Wales within 14 days after the HMP Birmingham Rioting. To be absolutely clear, this predicted Earthquake has a reasonable probability of exhibiting a Magnitude greater than 2.5ML , will occur within the land area of England and Wales and more likely than not will strike before 30th December 2016.

For the record I find your hypothesis highly unlikely, but I do applaud your readiness to make a public prediction.

  3. Let's take it the other way:

    CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O

The equation balances and portrays the burning of methane in oxygen. So the OP really seems to be asking "Is this a reaction that can be driven in the opposite direction?"

I imagine that under high pressures and possibly high temperature it might be possible, but my gut reaction (very scientific) is no. Where are the chemists?

Edit: It occurs to me that since the reactions shown is exothermic, then the reverse reaction if possible would benefit from high temperatures. i.e my "possibly high temperature" would become "and definitely high temperature".

  4. re: Ophiolite

Can we just drop the sine wave? It has nothing to do with the theory. I just presented it that way to try to get people interested. It's not even mentioned in the original theory. If it matters, I'll say I was absolutely wrong, and you are absolutely right.

Marvelous. I've never been absolutely right before. What a marvelous Christmas present.

Ophiolite said: "However, I see no reason that such diurnal effects would initiate evolution as you suggest. Yes, they would influence evolution, just as many environmental factors do, but that is quite a different matter. So, there must be some other factor you envisage is at work."

edit: I am saying that according to my reading of the biology the light-dark cycle played the biggest role. There would have also been diurnal fluctuations in temperature and in the intertidal, drying cycles (not strictly linked to the diurnal cycle). Can you summarize what the other big players would have been?

I don't think any biologist, or knowledgeable amateur would deny that the diurnal cycle has had a powerful influence on the selection process in evolution. But are you suggesting it was more important as these major players:

    1. Extensive presence of liquid water.

    2. Or, to put it another way, Goldilocks zone conditions.

    3. Salinity, pH, fugacity, etc.

    4. Gravitational acceleration

    5. Solar spectrum

    6. Atmospheric composition

    7. Atmospheric motion

    8. Ocean currents

    9. Etc.

And your implication is that the diurnal patterns initiates evolution, that it somehow takes the place of available genetic variability and subsequent mutations. If that is not what you intend you need to be clearer in your exposition.

  5.

Do you really not see how the day-night cycle is kind of a sine wave (with a slowly increasing period, especially on the equator)?

Certainly I see it. The X-Axis is time and the Y-Axis is the amount of incoming light from the sun. Of course we have to flip the sign of the sine wave at sunrise and sunset, but that's OK.

However, I see no reason that such diurnal effects would initiate evolution as you suggest. Yes, they would influence evolution, just as many environmental factors do, but that is quite a different matter. So, there must be some other factor you envisage is at work. Which brings us back to the question - what is the Y-axis of your sine wave?

  6. Did you spot the critical phrase in the Telegraph article or the vital word in their headline?

It's the bit that allows the courts to take account of those sorts of things.

And that is precisely what you declared in your post, through implication, was unnecessary.

Perhaps it's elitist of me to expect you to read and understand it it.

I read it and I understood it. I read your post and understood it as written. If you meant to say something else then I shall be elitist for the moment and suggest you need to learn to write more clearly.

  7. Indeed!

What could be more reasonable than not knowing something published in a national newspaper?

There's a general expectation that paying someone to do something illegal is illegal.

If something looks too good to be true (like, for example, a very cheap waste disposal service) it probably isn't true.

    Don't most adults know that?

The bit about lawyers is a red herring.

Nobody expects you to know all the laws- they just expect you to check that something isn't banned before you do it, otherwise, as I said earlier claiming ignorance would be a way to get away with murder.

This is just elitist, patronising crap. I would have expected better of you.

Let's take the average person in the UK. Income stretched to breaking point. Trying hard to do the right thing: dispose of rubbish without dumping it in the environment. Here's about a small company that can take care of it for a reasonable amount. (When you are living on £200 a week, you don't appreciate why it would take £100 to get rid of your rubbish.) You never got taught critical thinking skills. You've got plenty else to bother about, so you go for it, believing you are doing yourself, the contractor and the environment a favour.

    Excuse the vitriol, but really!

  8. Just to put the shoe on the other foot, if it is acceptable to require politicians to take a science course, then perhaps it would be acceptable to require a woman having an abortion to watch a video first.

Forcing education on people is unlikely to work IMO.

The woman is making a decision that directly impacts herself, her fetus, the father and a handful of others.

The politician is making a decision that impacts thousands, millions, or billions.

  9. Congrats on your job, i can only hope i end up in a related field as i truly believe the real discoveries are going to come from exploration rather than science. Sphinx's age for me is just a small example of a larger picture here, i was not claiming anything nor is my mind made up on the subject i just found it an interesting read. I will say yes i am cherry picking here, cherry picking a lot of things that fit into my theory of how things are....thought i made that clear in the first post. Is there something inherently wrong with that? I am not picking these things out of thin air to fit some sort of agenda i have, ive just taken bits of information that made a whole lot of sense in my head and put them together to form a larger view of our existence.

Almost every piece of information you have that you believe support your world view can be deconstructed in a similar way. Many, many pieces of information you choose to ignore refute your worldview.

In other words your worldview is the product of your imagination. It is neither original, nor convincing. I recommend reality for superior mental challenges.

  10. Lawyers, solicitors and barristers are ignorant of large swathes of law. It is therefore rather ridiculous to place upon individual citizens, with no legal training, full responsibility for knowing the law. Or rather, while it may be right to note their responsibility for this, we would be insane to expect it and justice would rarely be served if the system did not take this into account - which, to a greater or lesser extent, it seems to do.

  11. I believe if you actually read the forum rules you will discover that your post conflicts with them. Provide a summary of your thoughts for discussion here. Otherwise it might be thought you simply wish to drive traffic to your site.

Bonobos are interesting so I hope you will share your thinking on them here.

  12.

There are so many examples but to give another one, studies of the sphinx suggests that is is much much older than believed because of its state of decay, that wind could not have caused the damage and to date it correctly when there was enough precipitation in that area we would have to go back to the 5th or 6th millennia BC.

Yes, let's take the Sphinx. One "investigative writer" supported by the views of a single geologist make the claim you have repeated.

I have stood by the Sphinx and examined it. Have you?

I have a degree in geology. Do you?

I have been caught in the Western Desert by a sudden downpour more than once. Have you?

Based upon my personal examination of the Sphinx, my knowledge of the mechanisms of erosion and the propensity for occasional severe rainfall to occur in desert regions, I have little doubt that the current condition of the Sphinx is consistent with the generally attested age.

Now you would be quite right not to take my word for it. You should rightly question my assertions. But if you do that, you need also to question the assertions of a single "investigative writer" and a single geologist. Some how it seems unlikely that you will do so. You seem to much prefer the fantastic world you have created by cherry picking popular works.

  13. Americans provided weapons to ISIS and advanced technology like drones.

Possibly so. Do you have evidence to support the assertion?

They have crossed the line by conquering Iraq. Arabs detest Americans and will fight USA tooth and nail if they decide to unite.

Clearly your definition of conquer and mine differ substantially.

As to Arab unity, that hasn't worked out to well over the past century has it?

I have seen American propoganda in my country trying to provoke Muslims to become jehadis and take down the Government.

    Which country? When?

We do not need a New World Order with racism in mind.

We don't need treacle to be applied to mahogany dressers, but how is either observation relevant to your post?

  14. Are you

    a) Trolling

    b) Bored out of your tree

    c) Undertaking a research project to determine how much crap people will read before complaining

    d) Not taking your medication

    e) Holding the mistaken belief you are amusing

    f) Some combination of the above

    g) Other. Please specify.
