  1. Look, I feel almost exactly like you so, I'll tell you my opinion.

I think that you're sure you have a talent for arts, but are you sure that science is what you want to develop through your whole profesional life?

I mean, I am thinking to do something about Chemistry, but actually I'm not so sure that it's what I want to do, I'm not so sure if I like it or if I have any "talent" to that. I have been thinking about music (though I've just started learning keyboard) or cooking (cause I love it) as careers (it may sound anti-scientific). I think analysing all the cards you have in your hands is the best option. Look for what profesionals of these areas think about what they do.

You have to see that if you're good at drawing, it's one step closer to a good drawing career. Having a job that you love to work with must be a great experience.

Hope I could help cause I loved this discussion.

  2. Ladeira, the martial arts will help build your stamina. This will let you run faster and further.

    Keep in mind the first rule of dirty street fighting;

"If you can't talk your way out, and you can't run your way out, and there isn't a block of wood handy, then fight him fair and square."

Mate, I won my last fight by 100 metres and three fences.:D

Bottom line is move, and take your family with you.

    Scaring

    But creative sentence :D

These days are being funny... When I see someone who looks strange, I run from the person even if people think it pretty weird.

  3. I like the forum as it is now BUT i don't see any problem about changing it or removing the homework section.

I think removing it will be really good for the forum since I can see many people registering and posting one thread to solve their HW problems, then they just give up the forum.

I don't intend to say that people won't keep doing it, but I think they won't be jailed in HW section... I think new members will be able to see all around and know the forum and not only their HW thread.

  4. put some Arsenic pentoxide in a drugs baggie and keep that in your fake wallet too, you can at least walk away then with a smile knowing that you`v extracted some sort of revenge >:D

    what an evil thing :o

anyway, i've got no idea how to obtain it. :)

maybe, i'll get something from organic lab class... there are all sorts of toxic things :D

Today I watched a documentary about the violence in Rio. It can be compared with a war... Some interesting facts say that each three hours, someone is murdered in Rio and there are nine times more deaths happening through urban violence in Rio than in the Israeli–Palestinian conflicts.

  5. hahaha LOL

    I laughed a lot.

Suprises party are always fine... imagine with lab coats.

I like crazy days with friends when we do crazy things and don't care about what others will say, like taking pictures laying on the floor of an unknown university. It was amazing.

  6. Idk... In the end I guess moving is the best option!

I liked all the answers... I'll look forward to martial arts, only to be prepared to use it if I really need it. I also liked the idea of carrying a pepper spray !! I've heard that some old women use it when going out... pretty interesting. :D

And running for me is the best tastic if the distance is short, but I've got to say I'm an asthmatic skinny teenager lol. So running may be kinda impossible if it's more than 100 meters.

And what police say about it? Nothing. They don't investigate homicides (imagine assaults!) as MrSkeptic quoted from Wikipedia. I don't even go to a police office, it's a waste of time.

  7. If you are curious, there are 2 methods in which a normal person (albeit pretty geeky) could generate measurable amounts of Au-197 from Hg-196.

1.) Grab a good proton emitter like Polonium or Radium, and mix it up in a blender with heap of a low-z element, like Beryllium or Lithium. You might get up to 1x10^9 neutrons per second if mixed right (although you'll prolly want to throw away the blender, it will become activated and very unsuitable for making smoothies afterwards)

2.) You could purchase a bar of Californium-252, which throws out neutrons all by it's lonesome. For around $25k, you get a little bar with a half life of about two and a half years a that will emit a mean amount of 1x10^8 neutrons per second. Not cheap, but feasible.

I'm sure there are some I haven't thought of, but that ought to get you started. I supposed you could also open a ton of smoke detectors and take out the Americium and mix it into a matrix with lithium (like 2 above), but that would probably take a long time.

Have fun, and always remember - for shielding, cover your high-z lead shield with a good beta absorber (like wood).

    Cheers.

My God! We've got a cake recipe!

    (I couldn't avoid the joke, I'm sorry)

I can't help guys, I have no experience about it.

  8. I think drugs addictions are not diseases. What is a disease, IMO, is what is caused by the drugs. I also think that having more susceptibility to addiction is nothing more than having white skin and being more susceptibility to skin cancer because of the sun radiation.

    BTW, I liked this discussion.

  9. Violence is one thing, but this is robbery.

I think that when they threaten you, it becomes violence. Anyway, what happens is more than someone running and taking your cellphone from your hand. You're being approached on a street and listening to death threats. For me, it's a kind of violence. The big problem is that it is not an isolated event, it happens all the time.

Perhaps some sort of neighborhood watch program can help.

It's rare here. I would love a program like this but it wouldn't work because it wouldn't be supported. BTW, people around here don't have a sense of community.

Sayonara3 went to a martial arts school there in Rio, Ladeira. It's always good to be able to defend yourself. But I agree with big314mp, the best thing to do is travel with friends, big friends with muscles and crazy eyes.

    In a tank.

I'll think about the idea of martial arts. It would be pretty interesting. But while I'm not a black belt, I'll try the other option :D

Move somewhere else, a safer city, a safer neighboring country.

All my life is here... changing so suddenly would be like going to an unknown place and abandoning all the life I have here. I would love to move, but there are parents' work and all this stuff.

Wow, that's awful. I'm from the suburbs here in the US, so not much interesting happens around here.

    interesting ???

I've always heard that if you look confident and sure of yourself, you won't get assaulted, as attackers are looking for easy targets. Perhaps you could enroll in a martial arts class to pick up that I-will-kill-you-dead sort of look.

Oh, and spend more time with your friends as a group is harder to attack.

Take what I say with a grain of salt, as there isnt much violence to be found in a 250km radius of where I live ;)

I am a short and thin teenager. I am an easy target and it can't be changed.

As I told Phi for All, I loved the martial arts idea and I'll look forward to it. Where the heaven do you live???

Violence in Rio is like an old New York.

  10. I live in Rio de Janeiro and I can't hold it anymore.

Last year, I was assaulted twice. It was a terrible experience. My first assaulted was very "simple", the man held my arm and said he would shoot me if I ran as he had a gun (he didn't show it) then he asked for my cellphone. Since I wasn't wanting trouble, I gave him my cellphone. It was on a Thursday.

My second assaulted was in a different place, near my last school in Rio downtown (Tijuca area). I was alone and the place was as empty as a desert. A man came, without a shirt and holding a broken glass bottle. He has put it on my neck and said he would tear my face up. I got scared as the man looked like being under drugs effect. He robbered my bag pack, my mp3 player and my wallet (with documents), then he ran into a slum (I didn't know the place he ran to was a slum, I knew it after because people told me there was a dangerous place). The place I was attacked was in front of a firefighter base. It was on a Saturday (the same week as the first assaulted :-( ).

But why am I angry now?

Last Friday, I was going to the bus stop (18:30h) after a tiring lab class. When I was almost there, two men came and asked me where was the "olympic village" (a place near my school I didn't know where was), and since I got scared because they looked like having bad intentions, I walked back. One of them saw I was afraid (there were some people near the bus stop) and they went away. I changed the corner I was on to one farther... As my bus was coming, the men came back too (the time between they talked to me and their coming back was about 2 minutes). I ran and got the bus before they could catch me. I was pretty scared.

Yesterday, I was walking through a busy overpass while going home from my English course. A man came behind me and held my back and he was about to talk to me (he looked as a typical assaulter). As a reflex action, I ran as fast as I could and as a classmate from the course was near, I told him I almost got assaulted. This classmate, very gentle, went with me to the bus station... as he was an adult, the assaulter hesitated.

The violence in Rio is chaotic. We can't hang out with our friends, we can't go on a walk, we can't go to school, we can't do anything outdoors. We're always scared when we walk through the streets... And the police is absent, the govern is absent and there's nothing we can do, only paying the extremely governement fees.

This thread is a desperate protest.

How are your lifes affected by violence, people? How is it in your city?

  11. I'm still learning radioactivity.

Alfa is a particle which owns two protons and two neutrons, right?

So, if it is released, it may become helium, considering that the particle alfa catches two eletrons. Is what I am saying right?

If it is right, is there a medium time that it happens? I mean, how long does it takes to alfa become helium?

  12. Heh, you're quite a bit like me Ladeira. :) I should drink a lot more water though, my room is usually hot as hell and I often drink as little as one litre a day. Btw you should really try kebab, it's great. Although the kebab I've eaten hasn't got that much to do with original kebab. :D Anyway there's a lot of variety too, like these sort of rolled up kebabs, bread kebabs, kebab with fries or rice... In Finland you can get an Iskender kebab in almost every kebab place, and they're made of win and awesome, so to speak. --This-- is a very typical portion... man I'm hungry. :D

Dudde, ever been to Hardee's? :D

    041116_monsterTB.hmedium.jpg

Btw there's no Burger King, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell or Hardee's in Finland. Can you imagine what sort of constant agony my life is? There's always McDonald's of course, but I'd gladly go for something heavier.

    Dude, I am drooling.

Here in Rio, we know kebab as greek barbecue (when rolled up), there is an urban legend which says these 'greek barbecues' are made of cat meat... i love urban legends :)

I guess there are no Hardee's here. Anyway, it looks so tasty (my eyes must be shining crazily now)...

Food is a passion... I've just finished grabbing pizza.

  13. oh i didnt know what is kebab (now, i find it in Google Images).

I eat fast food around four times a week (pizza, McDonalds, greeezy snacks)

I drink MUCH water (around 8 glasses per day)

I don't like much salt, I prefer a little little.

    I don't smoke, don't drink, don't use drugs.

I don't practice exercises ( i hate exercises even knowing they are healthy )

I like lots of kinds of vegetable and fruits...

I am addicted to chocolate (at least once a week)

    that's all :D

don't matter, there is a long life after death so you don't need to matter, you'll die anyway.

  14. Thanks for everyone !

The cause was discovered without the need of a doctor. As my grandma says, "I don't go to doctors, they always find a new disease to me". The doctor would probably say I have a tuma.

But however, my last physical-chem lab class didnt need any volatile thing (except concentrated HCl that we've handled in the fume hood), so I didn't feel headache.

The glasses distubes some, so I'll provide another, but they aren't the reason of my extra-large headache!

Thanks again for being with me through the misterious headachey journey!

Probably, the cause of the headache are the fumes but the fumes disturbs because of migraine. I have to admit that the symptoms are very similar, there is no need to be a doctor to see it (and feel, it hurts!).

  15. The link is working.

    Thanks for all of you.

Google Docs is wonderful! Have you tried?

I am sorry to consider atheism as a religious option. It was the only way to make a clear questionnaire. I wanted to keep it objective. Understand?

Psycho, I know! I don't understand how it may be such a problem. I think it's going to explore the religion variety deeper, specially the consequences of it.

  16. I am making a survey about the religious development in current society.

This survey will be made through a interpretation of a simple questionnaire which will deal with how religion is related to the social relations, the supernatural, the personal opinions and what are the consequences of the religious variety.

The questions are in English Language and can be answered in the link below:

Questionnaire - Data Survey - How is religious development in current society?

I am opened to your suggestions, questions or any doubt that may come to mind.

    Mail: a.ladeira@ymail.com

    Thanks!
