  1. Hello Science Forums, I'm a Freshmen in high school. I've always been interested in Science, but I always found it difficult to grasp. So I was just wondering; where do you BEGIN to grow a large understanding of the Earth around me? I've always been inspired by EVERYTHING you all do, and I'd like to help grow an ever expanding knowledge of the Earth just like most of you.

So, I'll just ask in the form of my most common questions for people like you:

    > What books should I read to grasp a better understanding?

    > What should I focus more on and less on for these subjects?

    > What would be the best, more effective ways to stay informed of today's scientific discovers?

    Thank-You,

    -I2012.

I recommend megazines to stir interests and motivation, and hit the bookstore to get some basic books there.

  2. The whole Bangazi thing is to cover up the failure media propaganda campaign they did on Libya from 2010 to 2011.

Death of low ranking ambasadars in warzone is extremely common and they only select the ones that are useful to report everywhere across the whole nation.

The guy who died is neither a great important asset to the Dominion nor was he a traitor.

  3. I have a very elementary understanding of physics, but from what I understand there are several physical constants such as the Newtonian constant of gravitation, the Planck constant, and the speed of light in a vacuum.

I've also done some reading on quantum physics and string theory and I remember reading an article about the possibility of the universe we live in being a complex simulation of sorts.

As I got to thinking, I couldnt not understand why physical constants like the speed of light exist. Why is there a maximum velocity; An exact number where acceleration stops? It seems like something that is hard-coded into nature.

I cant seem to fathom why there would be a limit to an intangible concept like speed, when the concept of time is limitless.

How plausible is it that we are living in a programmed simulation of a universe, while the 'actual' universe exists without phyical constants and much different laws of physics?

Very plausible, so plausible yet so not plausible that it seems inplausible, you know what I mean?

  4. How can we calculate the trajectory of non-spherical objects like a cube or an oblong football ? Is it even possible ?

Solving such problems would be more about prediction where the velocity after collision would be headed toward rather than the trajectory. It is possible, but very difficult

  5. Yeah, I was thinking about that possibility... though honestly, I don't think it explains everything. My skill in programming has all but improved, but my natural mathematical sense seems to have rubbed away. The quirk remains: I've been exercising with more math now than I've ever done in my life, yet I feel like the tedium associated with the nature of this work, including the way I have been taught to perform it (hardly any theory is provided, it's just about getting the problems solved...) has in fact cropped my intellectual "cleverness," "ingeniuity," lucidity," or "creativeness" regarding mathematics. I'm trying to say that these qualities seem to have been grinded-down, not that they were originally exceptional or anything. Well, I don't know. Thanks for your thoughts. :)

You are fine buddy, school has turned anti-intellect since schools are running based off of solely cash now AND most people are not intellectuals and the total cash of intellectuals is low in comparison to the masses, though intellectuals contain scientists and some rich business men.

My years of school has trained me how to lie, because every assignment, I just did it the way they wanted though I absolutely know it is the lesser effcient way than my own methods. I think this interesting skill will transfer good onto politics or trolling people in general.

  6. [math] f(x)= x^2[/math]

    [math] f(4)=16[/math]

[math] f'(4)=8[/math] What exactly is the derivative giving me?

that derivative is giving the instantaneous rate of change at the point when x=4 of the function f(x), which is 8, as shown

  7. Hi guys,

I just wanted to ask a genetics question purely out of scientific curiosity.

I bumped into a short video clip online showing what looked vaguely like a dead "Goat with a human face and 8 legs".

Google it if you want to check it out. I won't post it here because it is a little freaky.

Anyway, my question is: is this likely to be the result of a mutation or sex with a goat? I didn't think humans could interbreed with goats. LOL!

OK, it wasn't exactly a successful breeding, but I didn't even think it would reach that stage.

    Cheers

Genetically possible on this planet? I would say definately nope.

Frankensteinly possible though if you know what I mean

  8. Hi all,

Recent thoughts have led me to the question 'What is the actual physical mechanism which transmits force between objects?'

I'm referring to forces which act over a distance, so electric force or magnetism.

I'm familiar with the concept of the electric and magnetic field, where the force is proportional to the distance between the objects. But this doesn't explain how the force is actually transmitted between the objects through space between them.

    Thanks

    Dan

it's a mystery; as mysterious as the origin of mass

  9. Hey guys!

Here's a video of a great new concept that the Weizman Centre in Israel thought of- instead of lecturing to in the uni, where its the same place and same type of people who go there, they started lecturing in bars in major cities so anybody could come, listen and learn.

If you guys are into science, especially science education- watch the video and maybe do something like this yourself.

That is cool, however the government will not allow it for these primary reasons:

    - school is for education, yes, and also for political purposes

    - bars are informal - little tracking of attendence, noisy surrounding, etc.

    - financial problems generate from sudden change of style

  10. hello guys , this is my first post on this website so go easy on me....

i am currently a 3rd year university student (undergrad) that is majoring in finance/marketing. After some internships and talking to people in the field of i-banking and trading i realized that this is not a type of field that i would like to stay in for the long term, the long hours added to a toxic environment would not make the money worth it.

What i am planning to do is finish my finance degree , work for 5 years in finance (while studying computer science, mechanical engineering etc on the side) then head into robotics from a developper/entrepreneur angle as In the future i would like to develop products and software that simplifies home life (i know this is very vague, but right now i cannot explain it better)

i was basically wondering how & where can i get the necessary experience & information to properly understand robotics & its software if i am not a person that studied cs/engineering in university?

feel free to email me or answer to the thread

    thank you to all

My advice is to not be too stressful about anything. Stress leads to severe consequences in the end and sometimes temporary gain in front.

Be happy and pick something that doesn't bother you

  11. Hey all,

Some of you may have read my previous posts about attaining an education in physics.

I had to put things on hold for a bit; moving, new baby, new job, you know the deal.

I'm back and looking for some good introductory reading in physics to get the brain box buzzing again.

I'm currently reading "The Elegant Universe" and "A Brief History of Time", supplementing with "Explaining Physics" by Stephen Pople.

I've been recommended the "Feynman Lectures" as a start and good grounding and feelings on that would be much appreciated, as would any other suggestions.

(nothing too academic or advanced as I am still learning and found such works as "The Road to Reality" by Roger Penrose to be very math heavy and poorly explained)

Check out books by Neil Degrasse Tyson and Michio Kaku, also Brain Cox. I've read them, they are great.

  12. I would like to know the laws that can not be deduced from others, I know that they are many, but citing at least one is better than nothing.

Conservation of Kinetic Energy in Elastic Collisions (same as above)

  13. General relativity tells us that there is no universal time. It all depends on your frame of reference and velocity relative to other things.

So how can it be that time "began" at the Big Bang? - which is the conventional viewpoint.

    confused.gif

We cannot know how it began. We do know when it began. It began the moment matters were born.

  14. If you look at this list http://en.wikipedia....lems_in_physics

What do you think of it? Another day in the office? More handwaving? More dimensions? More everything? :) Or is it time to stop and do some re-thinking? Or do we even care? Everyday life consumes us very effectively so why bother? I get my money constantly and things are pretty much in equilibrium why rock the boat? We can even give some blind eye to minor cosmetic errors in science.

Ur feeling there is on the right course. It is not the scientists that work with the Hubble Telescope's fault with any of current society's problems. It is the bankers I tell ya. And also corrupt employees

  15. What would it feel like if something that's just happened were to get filed in our long term memory by mistake? If it's just happened then it's meant to be filed in our short term memory, but if it goes straight into our long term memory then it's going to feel like it's happened before.
