  1. hmmmm short for setup? like in the ooooooooold days when tv just came out you needed to have some proffessional guy come in an set it up so you could get that one crappy channel with nothing on it? If I put an extra single sock in the wash will I get an even ammount back?
  2. By the way, its true, Im smart but can't be bother doing anything about it. I couldve just grabbed the thesaurus and made myself look smart, but why bother.
  3. Hmmm damn, cant think of anything, closest I came was similie....... bugger and my IQ tests 130+ too. You shouldve asked, whats a synonym for synonym.
  4. Hmmmm; link philbo? I know about androgen insensitivity, but as far as I am aware there isn't a higher proportion of lesibians among XY individuals who have the phenotype of a woman. There was one study I read that was looking at the womb environment, it had to do with the hormone levels in the womb before birth, apparently the youngest boy in a family of serval boys was more likely to be gay. Even though this shows gay people are born like that, it doesn't show its genetic. Personally I think it could be both, it can be a life-style choice it can be effected by the environment. But its possible there are genes which control it, how these genes have been passed on is the question. For starters I would guess they were recessive so that they would only manifest themselves in a minority of the population, and hetrozygous individuals could pass them on (because they have offspring). I would also guess they are mulitple so that it would require more than one gene to produce a homosexual, and also it would allow for degrees of homosexual tendancies. Probably a good place to look for such genes would be the X chromosome, again just guessing, a study into the proportion of lesbians to gays would probably show if this was worth it or not. It would also be necessary for Homosexuals to indirectly influence the spread of their genes, since they aren't having offspring, they could instead provide resources for their siblings offspring, it could also be advatageous when times are hard and resources scarce, this is because there would be too much competition between family members for resources and this would be disadvantageous on the whole. So having some family members to be solely altruistic and childless would be an advantage for the family group who carried these genes. By the way, I am a heterosexual, while not homophobic, I haven't liked any gay people I have met. The guys are like sissy girls and u want to hit them and tell them to harden up, and they girls are even more up themselves and high strung than normal ones.
  5. We have crickets here in New Zealand too, they are large and oval and consist of patches of white wool spread out across a feild with several wooden sticks and a red ball.
  6. Yeah carnivorous plants are a bitch to grow, unless you live in a swamp.
  7. Hi, I'm Ben... *waves* *cheezy grin* I'm 24 and have BSc in Plant and Microbial Science, I have been looking for science related work here in Christchurch NZ but competition is tough and work is scarce, I am considering going to teachers college next year and training to become a Biology/Science teacher. I enjoy listening to heavy rock music and getting in the mosh pit, I also like old school techno and was a raver into hardcore back in the day. I like gardening and horticulture, mountain biking, fishing, tramping and camping (basically anything to do with the outdoors). I am an amateur poet, I used to write alot, got awards for creative writing back in Highschool, but since then haven't written much. My favourite science topics are evolution, genetics and biochemistry. I also enjoy cosmology, but I am however hopeless at physics and maths, although I did pass my highschool final calculus and stats exams with A's..... all this was quickly forgotten on the hard summer break. I like philosophy and I consider myself an agnostic, I like to challenge faith and make people admit things when they don't know them for sure.
  8. ROFLMAO at the thought, I cant imagine how you didn't drown from laughing.
  9. R U hot? Come to NZ and lets talk about how to remove pre-zygotic barriers!
  10. I generally think of cultural evolution beggining with Homo sapiens and "true" language, I'd guess that this was about 200,000 years ago, this allowed an efficient mechanism for the spread of memes. However perhaps cultural evolution and language started back with Homo habilis or before ~2.5 mya. However I think the the spread of memes would be limited and have a limited effect on their environment. I guess there are examples of memes in all sorts of animals, e.g. lemurs chewing millipedes, chimps using twigs to fish for termites, song bird imitating songs. However the spread of memes is severly enhanced when you can show and tell, not just show, this is because discussion and imagination open up new possibilites and allow memes to mutate at a faster rate.
  11. Too cold for roaches down here in the South Island, thank god... The only native poisonous spider we have are found under driftwood and amongst tussock on sand dunes, they are called katapos and apparently the femals are only poisonous during the breeding season, but I wouldnt want to test that one. There are several types of weta, the Giant weta being the coolest, it'd make the best reaction in a sleeping bag. Huhu grubs and beetles are kind of cool, the grubs are pretty tasty too. You should see the carnvorous land snails (not an insect I know) in Nelson and also the Nelson cave spiders. Get one of these down your sleeping bag! http://www.tepapa.govt.nz/TePapa/English/CollectionsAndResearch/Collections/InsectsSpidersAndSimilar/Spiders/Spiders_Web/What/Nelsoncave.htm
  12. Not yet, when we need to evolve to breathe NO and SO2 and drink filthy water, then maybe. Cultural evolution hasn't been around long enough to have any significant impact on our genes.... except maybe medicine/sanitation..... hallucinogenic drugs, no.
  13. mmmmmmmm Brunettes, its about contrast to me. Brunette with blue eyes or blonde with brown eyes..... mind you sparkling green eyes arent anything bad either.
  14. What are the odds that this persons blonde?
  15. Yeah I think google has its own built in dictionary, it also has that "helpful" thing saying did you mean to search for......_______
  16. Yes, cultural evolution perhaps, but genetic evolution, I doubt it, unless we were forced to eat hallucinogenic substances to survive, in which case the individuals that adapted so they were less effected would be the survivors, not the ones who can trip out.
  17. For starters LOL at YT.... like the site, yay for mould of ergot. I dont think that hallucinogenic drugs have influenced our evolution, this is because any hallucinogenic effects caused by these "drugs" is just a conicidence, it happens to fit with our biochemistry/neurology. The question is like asking if catnip has influenced the evolution of cats.
  18. "ride you didn't fit into"... do you mean you didn't have any room on the ride, or do you mean you were with people that weren't your "type"? Well, give me some background info on your grandpa, I'm not psychologist, but I can hazard a guess and psychoanalyse your dreams, I often do the same for my own.
  19. Ok, I dont buy this magazine, what papers does it cite as its reference sources, is this just introns or is it all junk DNA? I would like to see if the introns are more conserved intraspecies as well as interspecies (why? I am too drunk to actually think of why, but I know there is something good there)...... which genes were sequenced in this study, I am assuming it was only a few. I think they may need to do a broader study to give definitive evidence if this is the case. I guess the hypothesis is better than my favourite hypothesis though.
  20. Well, sometimes they can be born looking like a girl, but have the genes of a boy, its just that the receptors in the pathway that changes the function of cells via testosterone arent functioning/aren't there. Sometimes when puberty hits there is enough extra testosterone produced to turn them into a normal male. However sometime they look female all their life, it can be noticable by some features, eg adams apple, hip size, large jaw/cheek.... just like transvestites/transsexuals..... Frightening to think that you could be sleeping with a guy! lol.... or if you cannot have children as a women, maybe you should do a karyotype, you could be a man!
