  1. Hi guys, I'm wondering if there's a way I can get the full sequence in ACTG format for the human pro-insulin gene INS1? It's on chromosome 11. With introns would be good but I'm not familiar with the online databases
  2. This is when you're hospitalised. Yes, normally insulin is injected sub cue either upper arm, thigh or midriff.
  3. Not only that you can get Diabetic Keto-Acidosis (DKA) Essentially no insulin = no processing of sugar = no energy. Body 'melts' fat for fuel releasing ketones which increase acidity of the blood. Then, unless you're alien, (in which case what are you doing on the atkins diet?) you die. When I had it I was told that the average mortality rate was 5%. It is treated by having sugar + insulin via IV drip. (or in a healthy person eating sugar/carbs) IMHO Atkins = baaaad!
  4. If I might add.. as far as I'm aware lemons neutralise this hence why you often see salmon displayed on ice with lemons as it cancels the pong!
  5. I'm joe aka Phototoxin, I'm a forensic analyst (DNA - not like CSI!) but am pursuing a PhD in type 1 diabetes research soon. I figured the web might be a good place to bump ideas with fellow nerds/nerdettes. I'm Irish but live in the UK/England. I'm getting married in 36 days, :eek, it's my birthday soon and I like the colours red and purple. I have general geeky hobbies [dnd, mtg, photography, microscopy from time to time] and at present I use a Mac although when I get married my hyperspeed PC is emigrating from Ireland My scientific strengths are my flexibility and adaptability but my weaknesses would be my lack of depth in some areas (hoping to change that!) I did physics & engineering in secondary/high school and then a forensic science undergrad {cell biology, DNA, analytical chemistry etc} which I survived, got a job which I've been doing for about a year and as mentioned will hopefully be starting this PhD soon. The thought of researching and being able to **think** is getting me quite excited. Despite studying physics at school my life is mostly biology related but I have both sympathy and respect for physicists!
