  1. People should talk how they "feel" as long as it's legible. Admittedly my sentence structure isnt the best and I put apostrophies and commas maybe where they shouldn't be but i generally feel my spelling and lack of abreviations are a good thing. As mentioned above it's a multilingual forum dealing with complex discussion of tightly defined scientific concepts. Minimising ambiguity is essential in a forum like this.
  2. You could always use sulphur hexafluoride???

    anime

I don't see much benefit in learning anything scientific from Anime other than it might give you some ideas or a starting point for interesting concepts thus creating an interest in the sciences; Of note is "Planetes" which is a story about "space debris collection" circa 2079 which is often credited for it's realistic portrayal of space exploration. http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=713 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planetes-Complete-Collection-Region-NTSC/dp/B000HT3876/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1286897823&sr=1-2 I Suppose further to this would possibly Masamune Shirows Ghost in the shell series, which details with the continuing "Cyberisation" of the human race, it shows in depth dipictions of cybernetic implants and full cyborg humans while at the same time discussing the ethics of such a thing. A lot of anime concepts are relevent in science, just perhaps not readily applicable.
  4. My point was that cockroaches and other insectoid life forms (at least from what we know on earth) have a good resistance to radiation thus rendering even gamma ray flashes ineffective. It's space anyway and theres loads of radiation up there, i'd expect an interstellar ship to be heavily shielded against it in the first place.
  5. What if the aliens are giant cockroaches?
  6. Yes as in heat pads. Sorry, I am well aware of supercooling water but with the regular tools a household has i would find it difficult to achieve because of the impurities of the equipment. I've tried something similar, whereby I attempted to increase the boiling point of water by multi filtering through a charcoal filter and heating water in a microwave then introducing some kind of impurity to the mix afterwards. The experiment didnt quite work out and I can only assume this was due to the difficulties of purifying water to the to the required extent.
  7. This is a story of two worlds, one of these is our world; The one we can see and feel, the other, aan electronic microcivilisation that lives and breathes just beyond our grasp.

  8. The picture in OP and AJB's comments seem to relate more to Sodium Acetate? What does this have to do with cooling? Those are exothermic reactions.
  9. Electrolysis of salt water* should produce hydrogen bubbles, given the correct equipment you could collect the gas seperately. * Salt water because pure water itself is a poor conductor of electricity.
  10. Well my stepdad fell onto a nail while landscaping the garden one time, according to sources the gash was at least a centimetre deep.
  11. So from what i've read so far in this thread is that the seas have been getting progressively saltier and saltier as rocks erode. If this is the case, then would it be reasonable to hypothesise that the accumulation of this salt could have led towards an early mass extinction in the seas or would it be more reasonable to assume that the process takes such a long time that random mutations would have kept anything in this environment from extinction?
  12. Captain, while I realise this question may be better suited to the Ethics sub forum i'm not sure it's worth creating a whole new thread about one point; But if there is already an established ecosystem on the planet do we really have a right to go uprooting it and supplanting our own? I would wholly be for seeding our own ecosystem if this was a planet currently devoid of life, but destroying something that is already there for our own purpose seems a little irresponsible to me.
  13. I find the replicators quite agreeable when you look at their motivation. "assimilation of the best technology for the betterment of their race and to propogate their kind throughout the galaxy" whats so bad about that? Quite admirable in my opinion.
  14. Because it could be infested with those snake head Goa'ulds?
  15. I certainly do. I find it hard to side with an idea that suggests we just popped out of nowhere from a creator that there is no evidence for when there is an alternative that has plenty of evidence and research behind it.
  16. She's not my type. Maybe more Lily Coles or Lexa Doigs though
  17. How would the effect of this change at the earths apehelion & perihelion, or is the distance minute enough to be negligible?
  18. Do solar sails then work on the same principal being discussed? That photons emit a % of pressure, or is this more related to solar wind, which i'm not sure works in the same way?
  19. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders_of_magnitude_(force) The wiki article says that the force of light on earth from the sun is 570 MegaNewtons but I was wondering what this actually means and if there is any practical applications or useful information we can gather from this? The same article says the force from the space shuttle equals 1.8 MN at lift off and 570 seems a huge number yet I dont feel myself being crushed or incinerated when I go out in the daytime. What's the actual meaning of this expression. I assume it has some application in solar energy but i really dont understand what the expression means? could someone explain? Cheers,
  20. Belief in extraterrestrial life doesn't require you to assume an all knowing, all seeing omnipotent being the likes of which has never been seen before and is the creator of everything we know. Extraterrestrials (for me) are far more acceptable because we know we already exist - why can't something similar exist on another planet? Because we have never seen or known God it is hard for me to imagine that "It" even exists at all given none of it's attributes are seen in nature (spontanious creation of matter for example)
  21. I wasn't sure if the projectile had to make contact with the rails or not to fire. If the problem is that the rails wear out too quickly what about the possibility of using a coilgun?
  22. Forgive my following suggestion of being cold hearted and put it down to a lack of understanding how things work; but isn't the real obligation here on these 3rd world countries governments? Should they not be the ones reorganising their infastructure to produce a healthy economy that gives a reasaonable payout to everyone instead of making the rich richer and the poor poorer? It's much bigger than that and know developed countries are taking advantage. Without exporting things to us at such a low cost they would be even worse off but if they don't refuse to sell so cheaply how are they ever going to expect we will pay a higher price when they are already so willing to sell? I would have assumed that if they were a large producer of a certain product, and certain product was no longer in supply we would be willing to pay more for said product? I guess i'm saying that they set a mimimum export price for produce before they even agree to send it out of the country at all.
  23. I got this about 2 weeks ago, I'm on and off playign through the campaign but slightly dissapointed with the fact that Wings of liberty only has one for the terrans (heart of the swarm will be zerg). I'm enjoying it. I've also played online too but considering i've not really played any RTS for quite some time (sup com being the last one I played) i decided to play 3 vs AI to get a decent Zerg build order going... Even playing on medium i'm finding the computer to be very agressive and i'm losing a lot of the time. Either spending too much time getting my economy up to scratch before i start producing lots of units or again pumping out as many units as possible to defend my base from early scouts but then suffering later on because my economy cant quite replace those losses.
