what's up all. You can call me Megatron, after the unmerciful evil Decepticon of that show from the good old days. I'm interested in the study of robotics, electricity, magnetism, and chemistry. Well, I wouldn't want to lug a bench coilgun around all the time, it's a waste of time and energy. Besides, portable coilguns are cooler. But, I'm not building it right now. I'm building a bench version now. Lance, a voltage doubler just uses a 1:2 ratio xfrmr, right? I can wind my own.

I'm building a coilgun, I intend to create a portable version after this one. I have 4 350VDC 400v surge 4200uf and 8 350WVDC, 400V surge, 3600 uF caps. There are 3 series banks, 1 for each coil. What kind of charger should i use, mains powered?

I say you make a Coil Gun and do a demo at the seminar. You could easily make one with parts from cameras and maybe hardwares stores.

I say google "photoflash coilgun", making one is safe enough for a 9th grader, and it's not expensive. If you don't know what a photoflash capacitor is, just check out the guts of your friendly neighborhood disposable camera. They're quite effective for their size.
