People are discussing changing the definition based on a Cesium microwave transition to an optical transition in a yet-to-be-determined atom or ion. There are a lot of candidates at the moment. It's not obvious to me that there is a clear front-runner.

From your answer, one might infer that the duration remains the same? Am I correct?

two well defined events or occurrences

    Earth's rotation; Earth's revolution.

    Will someone name another two?

I know what is the current definiton for one second but I just can't understand how can scientists change the definiton to a "better one".
Therefore my question is how the currently used definition cannot be the most accurate one?

I don't understand this. Can you explain how the "definition" of "one second" is being changed? Please keep in mind that it is a duration.

gravity is a property of the geometry of spacetime in the presence of mass.

Is your question one of origins (of the Universe) or exactly how gravitation is related to matter?

If everything had a source, (like a mother and a child, or the sun and plants) then where did gravity come from?

Only the "universe" is probably infinite, by definition.

That might be called a probable definition. On what basis would one define the bounds of the universe using the word "probable?"

Hey, that just might be called a "quantum conundrum"!!!!!!

To construct an intellectual conscience that laughs in the face of other people's feelings, is contrary the idea of what ethics is, in the first place...in my critical breakdown.

This prefaces the sentence in question and clearly states what is weighed with scales. Things that are good or bad, i.e. moral qualifiers.

Well, I was going to address the German original of the English translation that has become the basis of this dispute. I searched for other translations but found the following before I found what I sought:
The most interesting and penetrating diagnosis of this condition I have ever encountered

I do believe that this precedes my first writings on the subject, but I will need to research myself to make that determination. Perhaps, you will find this man's treatment of the subject writing...persuasive.

    Let me know. Thanks.

  6. I'm not following this subject, but I did listen to this portion of the John Batchelor show on the subject of the Catalonia referendum:

This was a kangaroo referendum. There is no other way to describe an exercise where voters could print ballots at home and vote at any polling booth in all of Catalonia without having to worry about their names appearing on an authenticated voters’ roll. If there were ever a Platonic ideal of a riggable, manipulable exercise in voting, it was this separatist simulacrum of democracy, designed to ensure the only result possible was a majority vote for secession.

  7. Yes, this is what I mean and it appears that you follow.

Do you mean you want the original source of the data, which the IPCC then vetted and collected for presentation

  8. Let me make one thing clear. If you are going to convince me to discuss actual, factual data on the subject, then I won't be responding to "it appears to be from". Do you follow?

If you will 'right click' on the picture, you can copy the image address:

    www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/ar4/wg1/en/fig/figure-spm-1.jpeg

So, it appears to be from the IPCC's AR4 report, in Switzerland.

Does this reply mean that you won't provide a link?

  10. Presumably, for Theresa May.

I wonder which of the politicians in Britain know how many acid attacks have been committed in London since, well, since the first one.

Are you aware--I'm not asking with sincerity--that your post has no link to the source of your graphs? Perhaps, it was taken from Wiki-pee-D-uh. Perhaps, not. Please provide the link, a link, any link, after which I will address the input from your Memory Division. Thanks.

Am I the only one who's wondering whether "Patti_the_Scientist" has an opinion?

How can that be considered an exhaustive rebuttal? Just because you are not aware of something does not make it true or untrue. If you think his assertions are baseless, it's up to you to provide evidence, or debunk it yourself.

It is not an exhaustive rebuttal. What it is, is a damned good  rebuttal, The court case between Mann and Steyn is most illustrative (9.8 on Euphemism Meter.)

Let's be clear: I was being kind when I used the word "legerdemain".

Are you aware that Mr. Mann has failed to present any evidence in the 5-year-long legal case being adjudicated in, I think, several courts between him and Mark Steyn?

    How gracious of you.

A provisional reading of these answers reveals the same acerbic, dogmatic, angry style that seems to pervade your posts. Just as a point of information for you: this style inclines readers to think "What a dickhead" and then to ignore what has been written. You're not stupid, so perhaps you are doing this deliberately. Perhaps you want to evoke emotional reactions so you can take an imaginary moral high ground.

Frankly, I don't really care what your motivation is. I will tell you I don't like the end product and if this dialogue is to continue you will post in a polite, measured fashion. If this strikes you as disagreeable I shall just have to think of you as Scarlet.

As to the substance of your replies, I'll allow 24 hours or so to pass in order to wash the  cant content from my memory, and then reply.

Welcome as today's first person to be added to my ignore list. Congratulations. Good luck with your new user name if you chose that option.

Las Vegas investigation focuses on Paddock's finances and travel

As authorities search for a motive, Paddock’s finances have become a significant focal point — most notably, 200-plus casino or wire transactions by Paddock that were flagged for review by FinCEN, the U.S. government’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, which collects data to identify potential money laundering or covert terrorism financing. The FBI is also reviewing transactions by Danley that were flagged by FinCEN. According to a source familiar with the probe, the various transactions date back to 2014 and are being vigorously investigated. The sources said one transaction that has drawn significant attention is a $100,000 transfer to the Philippines by either Paddock or Danley prior to Sunday’s shooting. Danley was in the Philippines when Paddock opened fire on the crowd in Las Vegas.

1Simple, but a little complicated in terms of what was given to you, to think about.  I am not sure, in the realm of ideas, that one can think, without language and the meanings and definitions of words, what they stand for, the ideas they represent are given to you, by common usage and the dictionary and the explanations of others.

2Point of fact is that I was very happy to take CharonY's ideas and run with them, until you said "Nope".    Then the critical thinking, about what Nietzsche meant by intellectual conscience and what intellectual conscience must mean to TAR, begins anew.

3I am somewhat guided by the additional fact that you read works of Nietzsche framed in a work about gay people's morality, that one can come up with a rational to be gay, even if the historical rules about that say "nope".

On 1: I don't understand those two sentences.

On 2: I don't understand those two sentences

On 3: I do understand that sentence and find it preposterous beyond words. I consider that judgement prima faci (self-evident.)
