  1. There is this guy whose mother suddenly faints and needs immediate medical attention. However, when he leaves the house with his mother to get on his car, a friend whom he has never seen for ten years has just dropped by to pay him a visit. Then he sees this gorgeous girl whom he has secretly loved all these years walking down the street. What should he do?

He definately shouldn't put his mum on the car.

  3. Hey i've got an idea why dont you take this to pseudoscience or religion and then read up about how lightning works, take a look at the church and whats around it, and think before you speek.

  4. Morally speaking, its a really strange situation.

Think of it this way, when a woman is pregnant, and she is drinking before the fetus becomes a person (whatever that means), the woman is harming no one.

As long as she stops before the fetus is a person, then she's not guilty of harming anyone at all. If she never harmed a person in the first place, how can anyone say she is guilty of abuse?

What I mean by 'becomes a person' is when the foetus has passed the age where it is determined by the law or medical science or whatever it is no longer classified as a foetus but a person. I agree it is a strange situation and difficult to apply morals to. But, i disagree with you in that she has never harmed anyone because the foetus is now a person who has been abused. Oh and by the way it dosen't matter if you think a foetus is not a person until it is born or its three month, four months, or a day, it only has to be up to the time you consider abortion moraly justifiable.

In some states you can be convicted of murder for killing a fetus/baby. Now if we take BenSon's example of 6 months to become a baby, if one kills a fetus at 5 months, the person didn't kill anything, and if the Mother was a drinker, she wasn't abusing anything, but at the magic moment, the person becomes a killer and the mother an abuser.

Hey thats what I'm going for and by the way I may not necessarily agree that it takes six months for a foetus to become a person it was just an arbitary number I used to help get my point across. Oh as as for this magic moment crap I don't see you trying to apply some ethics to this situation so why don't you do better?

  5. I'm confused. So, the mother is allowed to drink until the foetus is considered a person. How long does that take? From responses on a similar thread about abortion, some of the guys here stated that they didn't consider a baby a person until the umbilical cord was cut. I think that would be a little too late.

Well thats the personal chioce, when exactly does a foetus become a person? But by applying what i said to any view of how late you can have a abortion it is consistant with pro abortion views. Eg

Lets say for arguments sake that abortions are legal for the first six months (I'm not sure of the laws where everybody lives but just used this as an example) Now if the foetus is not considered to be a person until it is six months old then for some people it is moraly justifiable to have an abortion. So if you drink alcohol while the foetus is pre six months your not doing anything wrong until it becomes a person at that time it does become wrong and the mother is at fault for the previous six months of drinking.

See by using this way you can oppose drinking at anytime while pregnant and still support abortion up to a certain point of the foetuses developement. So you can have your cake and eat it too.

    ~Scott

  6. I think its somewhere along the lines of.

The foetus should not be exposed to alcohol because while not yet a person, will become one soon, and then the damage is done to a person. But the mother is only at fault for drinking while pregnent after the foetus is classified as a person not before.

  7. hydrogne nitrate- nitric acid, it can be really concentrated thus not being in a solution of water. hydrogen sulfate- i think u mean H2S, that can exist as a gas outside of solution as a gas

Akcapar H2S is hydrogen sulfide not hydrogen sulfate. I think rthmjohn is asking weather it is possible to have anhydrous H2SO4. Not to my nowledge, once sufuric acid gets to a certain concentration it dosen't iberate as a gas like HNO3 or HCL but it decomposes. H2SO4 = SO3 + H2O. That is why one must be very careful when concetrating sulfuric acid because if you were to breath in the SO3 vapours they would hydrolyse in you throat. This is actually one of the causes of acid rain from sulfur impurities in fossil fuels however the main concern from sulfur oxides and acid rain is not sulfuric acid but sufurous acid H2SO3 wich is formed from the more comon sulfoxide SO2.

  8. EDIT:Also, will pressure help the H2 and the O2 to stay apart?I read that to help make the elements from re-grouping,u need 5000 degree C.
i dont see how pressure could possibly HELP, but i may be wrong.

and if 2500c is enough to separate them then 2500c will stop them recombining... for obvious reasons...

HyFC3S, you don't need 5000 degrees to keep H2 and O2 from reforming. d22k, while you are correct that by keeping the temperature above the point of decomposition will stop it reforming there is more energy efficient ways. If you rapidly cooled the H2 and O2 down past activation energy then you would keep them uncombined and use far less energy in the process. Oh, and yes pressure would only hinder keeping the gases unreacted in fact HyFC3S your best bet would be to keep the pressure low.

  9. And Iron (III) oxide doesn't work for thermite reactions, IIRC

For FerroAluminium thermites Iron (III) oxide is used (Fe2O3)

Iron (III) oxide will work, just not as well as magnetite.

I'd bet that Fe2O3 would produce more heat then Fe3O4

  10. 1. There is always a correlation between the place and the date: "Madrid" starts with "M"(March), "New York City" has 11 letters and "England" has 7 letters. (As does London on some languages)

    2. There is always some numeric correlation of the time that passes between each attack.

    1) So are you suggesting that authorities pay more attention on days when their cities name is the same length as the date (when spelt in any language)? Or on months where the both month and city start with the same letter. What about cities with names that don't have any months with corressponding starting letters like Brisbane or Perth?

    2) Apparently this numeric correllation is only found after the event, therefore eliminating any predictive qualities. This reminds me of the sham book the bible code the first one published before 9/11 did not predict it but the second one published after the event did (thus proving the "bible code").

  11. This is not a way to get rid of lots of H2SO4 though, because you should do the experiment only on a test tube scale! ClO2 is a very sensitive compound, which easily explodes (if you drip in some organic, such as ethanol or acetone, then it probably explodes, resulting in scattered glass and acid sprayed around!). The gas, however, is cool to see and when you keep the test tube horizontally, then you can actually 'pour' out the gas. If you do this close to the surface of some water, then you get really cool effects at the border of the glas cloud (kind of nebula on the water surface, which spreads out slowly). This experiment of course should be done outside.

That was fun smelled bad, but fun, I just realised that I used NaClO not NaClO3 so I don't think i made ClO but just normal Cl2

    HCl + NaClO = NaOH + Cl2

    Where can I get NaClO3?

    ~Scott

  12. Come on people, lets think of something large scale to do. The key here is I have lots of this stuff and while these demos are cool, they're small. Whats something that is only effective to do with large amounts of acid or much more effective when large amounts are used.

    ~Scott

  13. Woelen,

Mix with sodium chloride, just as 'etacude' proposes. Try to dissolve as much as possible NaCl by heating somewhat (no need to boil, that would drive off HCl). Let liquid cool down, remove the crystals (these are mainly Na2SO4 and NaHSO4) and then add some solid NaClO3. KClO3 also works but slower. You'll see a deep intensely colored yellow gas, ClO2. This experiment works great with acid of the concentration you mention. This experiment also works with concentrated HCl, but then you won't get rid of the H2SO4 .

Sounds good :) I'll do this one tommorrow or tonight if I have time, Any Ideas on something that I could make more large scale?

    Yt,

I`m curious as to why you think this is a "Ridiculous" amount?

and thus have to use some of it up (waste it)?

just put it in an appropriate bottle, and forget about it until you need it!

this seems such a Crazy question!!!

Crazy? Crazy! like a fox :D, I don't want to waste it Yt, I just want to use some of it up. Its like money whats the use of having it if you don't spend it. So any Ideas other the store it which I am currently doing and getting no satisfaction.

    ravio,

If i were you i just boiled it to high conc. Then i would get aproximately 1l concentrated sulfuric acid. Thats not too big amount to store and diluted sulfuric acid has not much use anyway.

I will probably end up doing that if I can't find any use for it.

    El

I am wondering if he had it originally as a lead accumulator electrolyte.

Perhaps his car battery is of such a type that needs sulphuric acid at such a

    strength

    .

Bingo it is just filtered car battery acid.

  14. I have about 3-4 litres of sulfuric acid of concentration roughly 3.75mol/L, I need to use some of this because its just rediculous to have this much H2SO4. Anyone who has any good ideas on what I can do with this keeping in mind I've covered many of the quick common experiments. So I'm looking for something a bit different I don't have many other chems but can buy easy to get ones, so fire away, and help out a guy who has way to much acid. ;)

  15. Ok do you mean that it was filled with a NaCl solution or paper soaked with NaCl because the only "salt bridge" I know of is the latter. And if you are using a paper salt bridge then that is the problem (a salt bridge of this kind is not used in these situations). If you are using a NaCl solution without the paper salt bridge then I would suggest changing the electrolyte to sulfuric acid.
