    Actually, I'm pretty sure both of these have issues. Because hydrogen is lighter than air, both values are going to be directly related to hydrogen's displacement of the air around it. The mass that you would obtain, Ice, will be negative. The opposite of this (multiply it by -1) is the mass of the displaced air. (By the Archimedes Principle) In order to calculate the mass of the H2 produced using that method, you'd have to know the volume and the density, and do a series of calculations... At that point, it's much easier just to look up the density of it, and measure the volume.

     

    By the way, do you mean mass or volume? You said amount, and both mass and volume are quantative measurements.

     

    What actually happens when i used salt, does it Na and Cl seperate as hydrogen and oxygen, or it will participate?..

  2. Are there any other ways of making rechargeable batteries? Can I just use the same stuff that they have in commercial ones, if I can get a hold of it? Also, where could I get sulfuric acid soln? And does it have to be a 30% soln?

    I don't mean to be harsh, but we are spending too much time bickering. If both sides compromise, than everyone can be happy and we can stop bickering. This thread is not the place to be waging your personal vendettas against others, this is somewhere to be discussing evolution in regards to declining human intelligence.

     

    Here's a possibility. Bear with me until you see the entire thing. Christ Slave, you stop posting more than two or three paragraphs per post, and everyone else stop making degrading comments on Christ Slave's posts/beliefs/etc. This way, Christ slave doesn't feel like he's being unjustly persecuted, and other people don't see as much of a reason to comment negatively on Christ slave's posts. And those people who are upset with the length of your current posts won't have to worry about it. Yes, this will force you to be concise, Christ slave, and yes, it will force everyone else to retain their views of your beliefs, but that is for the best. And I'm not talking about everywhere, just on this thread.

     

    By the way, Christ slave, I did read some of your posts - just not the whole thing. That's what I meant before, in the post that disappeared.

    On the other hand, unless you're using the Dictionary of Evolutionary Science (which may or may not exist), any such book is only going to give you a copy-editor's parred down version of a non-biologist's summary description of something he is not even attempting to explain. Aimed at the lay person.

    I've managed to scrounge up my ancient Webster dictionary (it's 19 years older than I am - more than twice my age) and it says:

     

    "in evolution, the process by which those individuals (of a species) with characters that help them to become adapted to their specific environment tend to leave more progeny and transmit their characters, while those less able to become adapted tend to leave fewer progeny or die out, so that in the course of generations there is a progressive tendency in the species to a greater degree of adaptation: see also DARWINIAN THEORY."

     

    My "new" concise dictionary, which is in many ways less dependable, says thus:

     

    "Biol. The process whereby individual variations of advantage in a certain environment tend to become perpetuated by the race."

     

    Once again, the 35 - year - old dictionary proves more trustworthy and useful than either a "modern" online dictionary OR a "new" one.

    Hmmm... I would have to disagree on that last part. I (personally) believe that humans, as a collective, have begun to escape the process of natural selection. We are, in most cases, at the very top of the food chain. Our treatment of diseases and "equal treatment" of all people has defeated the process of natural selection, in my mind. We are too moral for our own good - if someone is dumb onough to walk in front of a train with the gates down, or to walk across a busy highway and get hit by a car, we will not allow natural selection to stay the course, even though at this point it is more artificial than natural. Also, it's not that the genes being passed down help one to survive - its the number of kids that matter in this case. If one family decides to be fiscally responsible and have 1 or 2 or 3 children instead of 15, they will have a better chance of succeding (fiscally) in society. At the same time, there could be a prostitute who has 14 children, all abandoned at a hospital, who all survive. That has nothing to do with survival - the prostitute would actually be more likely to die first. Maybe the genes required for more offspring are, simply, an abnormal frequency of horniness.

     

    The dictionary definition of "natural seection" is, by the way, this:

    The process in nature by which, according to Darwin's theory of evolution, only the organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and transmit their genetic characteristics in increasing numbers to succeeding generations while those less adapted tend to be eliminated.

     

    Put another way, it's the process by which members of a population most likely to survive are able to produce offspring and pass on their genetic information while those less likely die before they are able to do so.

     

    The problem for natural selection with humans is that we won't let them die. The only way to do it would be "artificial selection," in other words, selective breeding. How's this one for kicks - send everybody on Earth that has the "desireable" traits to a different planet - or, if we wanted to please environmental activists, send the ones who aren't "desireable" to another planet. Note that the problem with this is that "desireable" is going to be misinterpreted by society - a "desirable mate" in some societies (as in, the U.S., among others) is considered by many to be someone who is physically attractive. The problem is with society. Too humane, too moral, for our own evolutionary good.

    Mathematical fact. IQ is measured as [math](Mental age/physical age)*100[/math]. It stands for Intelligence Quotient, by the way. Lets say your mental age is fifteen years more than your physical age. If you're 15 years old, thats an IQ of 200. Now, for a while, these will progress as the same rate as previously, but as anyone with an older relative knows, mental progression, in general, does not progress at the same rate in one's teens as in one's thirties. So, for the sake of math, let's say that your mental and physical progression level out at the age of 20. You're IQ will still be approximately 200 (because previously, the rates of progression were the same - so mental age was always increasing at twice the rate of physical age). Your mental age is roughly 40. Now, for the sake of simplicity, say that, for the rest of your life, they progress at the same rate. When you are 50, your mental age will be 70 (50+20=70). That's equal to an IQ of 140 ([math](7/5)*100=140[/math]. Math. It helps enlighten things.

  8. I've found some really nice free hosts, but the usual problem that I find is that they claim that they have "no advertising" and then, a month later, they have huge banner ads that mess up your site's alignment. Really, really annoying.

  9. It might be a problem with where you are posting the HTML. If it's just in a normal text box, the host will orbably interpret it as text and/or throw errors. It also might be a problem with your browser - can you view frames in other examples?

     

    Another GREAT website is www.htmlgoodies.com. You can teach yourself HTML in less than a week (and have a pretty good working knowledge of it) if you use the primers on that site.

  10. Make the gas chamber as thin as possible and use mirrors to scan the beam directly into the gas. Switch the beam on/off for each pixel. The beam hits the first mirror which is rotating which causes the beam to scan left/rightcontstantly, this scaning beam hits a second rotating mirror with its axis at 90 degrees to the first so it also scan up/down constantly. The mirrors would best be multi faceted. It may be better to use a stepper motor geared down to drive at least one :) mirror so you don't get an angular scan. Both mirrors on steppers will make it easier to syncronise with image input and the rise fall time of the laser and inputs. I believe gold to be a good reflector of ir. The mirrors will need to be close together. You may find mirrors the right shapes if you can scavenge some broken laser printers. These will also yeild steppers and possibly driver chips but the chips may be integrated with other things so it can be difficult. Hope this helps.

One of the half cells consists of oxygen gas bubbling into dilute acid (cathode), and the other consists of hydrogen gas bubbling into dilute base (anode). Platinum electrodes are used in each solution, and both half cells are connected with a salt bridge. A voltage is taken between the platinum electrodes.

     

    If I'm reading the information on your site correctly, ak, then this is what they mean:

    One beaker has a diluted acid in it. Oxygen gas is bubbling up through the solution, and there is a platinum electrode in the beaker. This is the cathode. The other beaker has a diluted base in it with bubbling hydrogen. This also has a platinum electrode. This is the anode. The two are connected with a salt bridge, and the voltage is measured on the two platinum electrodes.

     

    Like I said, that's if I'm reading it right.

     

    [Edit: I kinda doubt that someone who worked in a hydrogen research facility would spill their secrets, but they might give you a simple cell design.]

    I was aware that too much water and not enough urination can lead to kidney damage, but I was not aware of hyponatremia. Also, I am aware that that wasn't a citation - it was more of a "this is what an MD told me" than anything else. As for the whole urine color thing... Neither of the two sites you gave said that clear urine was unhealthy. I stand corrected on the clear being well-hydrated part as well as on the other point, but I would think that a lot of people might have a hard time making the distinction between light yellow and yellow. It's quite possible that I was told clear for the sheer simplicity of it.

    While 8-12 glasses of water is great for the average sedentary person' date=' many of us are fitness conscious or on the pursuit of some type of bodybuilding physique. With that in mind, I think the new standard for us should be 1-2 gallons of water a day.

     

    As a bodybuilder, you are putting much more nutrients, food, supplements, and other stuff into your body. What your body does not use, it must rid itself of by any means necessary. Usually it does this via water. So drinking plenty of water becomes a necessity. Increasing protein puts a strain on your body and drinking lots of water can keep things "moving." Creatine monohydrate supplementation requires a lot of water. Creatine is all about cell volumization. Making sure your cells are completely hydrated helps with the volumization process. NO2, a hemodilator, requires water. Many other supplements require water as a transport and a flushing method.

     

    The side effects of drinking too little water are an excess buildup of certain chemicals. Creatine can leave behind some buildup that overtime, becomes a bit hard to pass. Putting such a strain on the body is also self-defeating. But don't get me wrong, it's not just about Creatine and NO2. It's about making sure you are hydrated.[/quote']

     

    And sorry for not clarifying myself in my second post - I meant that there aren't any side effects to proper hydration except going to the bathroom more often. I suppose it could (in theory) be possible to still get hyponatremia with proper hydration and not over-hydration, but I would think that these cases would be pretty extreme - with a proper diet, it shouldn't be an issue. But, here I am just speculating, so if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

     

    On a lighter note, I never knew urine could be green or blue. That kind of amused me. What was somewhat more amusing are the problems this could cause - they put blue dye in the toilet bowl during drug testing to make sure people don't use water from the toilet. Talk about a bad time to pee blue. :)

    There are definitely side effects of too much water. There is a condition called "water intoxication" (hyponatremia) which is caused by excess water depleting the electrolytes in your body (especially sodium, AFAIK)

     

    It's not just athletes that are at risk. Here is report of a water intoxication death.

     

    Citation? About 6 years of first aid training, including areas concerned with dehydration. Even one of the instructors I had in a CPR class expressed this - and he was a medical doctor.

     

    And as far as hyponatremia goes, I somehow doubt that the average high school athlete is going to drink enough water to flush his/her body of electyrolytes. Your own article starts with the question "Can too much water harm marathon runners?" Later, it states that "Whether athletes other than marathoners experience this series of events is unclear" and that the majority of the victims of hyponatremia were taking anti-inflammatory drugs. It also says that "These drugs can block the excretion of water from the body." FYI, many marathons will not allow any runners under 18 to compete. And the longest distance at the high school level is 2 miles (3200 meters). A marathon is more than ten times that. Marathons also frequently have more negative effects on runners than just sodium depletion. Some marathon runners also stock up on carbs and water the day before the marathon, which probably contributes to the problem. And as for a citation for that last bit, I have friends who run marathons.

     

    Plus, if he/she is drinking powerade or gatorade, he/she is taking in minerals that replenish electrolytes, or whatever the scientific term for it is.

  14. If you'd like to prevent it, drink lots of water/Gatorade/Powerade. Even if this wasn't due to dehydration, it will most likely help. You should also notice that you don't get sick as much if you drink lots of fluids, and if you're drinking gatorade/powerade, you will probably notice your times getting better. At least, both of those have always been the case with me in my 400m and 3200m races.

     

    The best indicator of dehydration is urine color: if it isn't clear, you're dehydrated. And yes, that means that most of the world is dehydrated, and no, I don't always practice what I preach.

     

    The unfortunate side effects of water? None, really, except going to the bathroom.

    The MEMS shutter array is EXACTLY the kind of thing I was talking about. Unfortunately, I'm on a limited budget, and I would assume getting a hold of one custom made for the IR spectrum might be a little... expensive. But, who knows? I'll try and find out. In the meantime, any other ideas? Any ways to build things like that at home? (I have NO intention of making something anywhere near as complex-- or small--as the MEMS shutter, but you guys get the idea).

     

     

    I have ideas about shutter materials, which would have to be IR opaque, but any suggestions would be more than welcome.

     

    As for the experiment, it is in no way dangerous, except for the handling of the gasses that I am causing to fluoresce. And in that, I am fairly confident that I can manage not to blow myself up - I'm not using anything that's particularly dangerous, and it's all going to be in a closed environment. But you're right, Mustang, I'm not going to answer exactlywhat my experiment is until I've already done it, which is a ways off.
