  3. Ok so I'm having to pick up chemistry after 7 years of having nothing to do with it. I've searched around for tutorials on the different types and how they work, but I'm stuck with a couple of (simple) questions. I need to write a balanced equation for: Bromine gas to monatomic Bromine. I think this is: Br2 -->2Br. I've been told it's enthalpy of hydration...but I'm not sure why that is! Ok, second question is balancing Sodium gas to a sodium (I) cation. What does the (I) mean? Just Na+? Is sodium not Na2+? Obviously I'm missing something here...also I need to state the type of enthalpy. The last question is balancing monatomic bromine to a bromide anio…

Dear All, In the manufacture of Ethyl Sulfate, CH3CH2-O-SO2OH, does it matter if Ethanol is added to Conc. Sulfuric acid or vice versa, (slowly with stirring ) and if the addition temp is about 25 deg C ? During the hydration of Ethyl Sulfate, does it matter if Ethyl Sulfate is added to excess water or vice versa ( slowly with stirring ) at the addition temp of 25 deg C ? Can the Conc Sulfuric acid be regenerated by boiling off the water present ? Thanks in advance, jmarjorie

I recently rediscovered my brewing kit and decided i'd have a go at making some good ol' home brew, however I forgot when it was meant to be bottled and it was left fermenting for about two weeks too long. Hopeing for the best, me and a few friends drank a pint each today at lunch to find that I have created some kind of super brew which i'm still feeling te effects of four hours later. I'm guessing it's roughly 7-8% but i'd really like to know exactly. Do any of you know of a way I can test my brew to see how alcoholic it really is?

  6. Dear All, I wish to attain a 'one-pot' synthesis of a diol from an alkene, and have drawn up a reaction scheme; pls let me know if the following is feasible: Points to note : 1) The Alkene is an aliphatic hydrocarbon and is water soluble (soluble in Ethanol, the resultant mix is soluble in water) 2) The reaction temperature in all cases is 25 degrees C 3) There are no other functional groups present in the alkene REACTION SEQUENCE C = C + HOCl ---------> C(OH)-C(Cl) (5% NaOCl, pH 6.5) C(OH)-C(Cl) + 2M NaOH (aq) --------> C(OH)-C(OH) Is…

I was considering either antiaromaticity, pericyclic reaction or bond delocalization. Yall have any other suggestions of what might be a really interesting topic for this? Thanks a lot

http://physicsweb.org/articles/news/10/3/9/1?rss=2.0 organic molecule (a doublebond between two carbon atoms functions as the axle) when activated by heat and light, the molecule turns things, like a small glass rod that is a few thousand times larger than the molecule turning it. here is a picture http://physicsweb.org/articles/news/10/3/9/1/060309 the macroscopic object being turned is floating on liquid crystal I am not sure how new this is or how important. It may not be all that impressive---I don't know enough about this area to judge. Do you know of similar achievements in this area (single molecule motors)?

Hey! I know its incredibly cheeky please excuse me but I just wanted to ask you a chemistry-related question.. Could anybody tell me what product would be obtained when estrone (C18H22O2) is treated with C6H5MgBr followed by acidification with dilute mineral acid? I dont usually have a problem with these types of questions but this one has a few of us stumped!? If any of you could help it would be great. Thank you

  14. Are there any edible substances (compounds?) that can be added to food to cause an endothermic reaction? Kind of like putting an ice cube in hot soup to cool it down but using a compound instead & getting more of an effect like an instant ice pack. I'm thinking it might depend on the food but I'm not sure. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Could someone help me with naming the attached organic molecule. Sorry for the crappy diagrahm, but I did my best. Would the parent compound be Toluene? Would the name be 2-Hydroxy-3-Oxy-Oxytoluene? I have yet to take organic yet, so I have very basic knowledge of organic nomenclature. Thank you very much.

Does anyone know another name for ammonium bicarbonate? I hear it's more popular in the UK than in the USA. I've never heard of it and I was looking to buy some but couldn't find it in the grocery store so I thought that possibly there's a more common name for it. I'm looking to use it as a low sodium replacement for baking soda. Thanks!

In my organic chemistry textbook, there is a question regarding MS and chemical formula determination. The chemical in the question is nicotine, a diamino compound with two rings and a M+=162.1157 the formula has 2 nitrogens (MW 14.0067) for a total of 28.0134 g/m the rest of the formula is pretty easy to determine, given that there are two rings and no atoms other than N's H's and C's. My method (working out possibilities and rulling them out by the degrees of unsat and such) yielded the right formula (C10 H14 N2) The solutions guide uses a different method. They subtract the weight of N from the total weight, and then divide the portion of the number (the xxx in …
