  1. I have a homework assignment that due and I'm stumped on question 5. I don't know of an easy way to screen 5000 bacteria easily. I know that you can do manually, but that'll take too long. The question seems to be hinting that there's a way to screen the bacteria quickly, as per the last line. Any help would be great. I have an idea of how to do it, but I want some input too. Thank you so much, here's the question: 5. P.aeruginosa requires quorum sensing for virulence, and as we discussed inclass, there is significant interest in identifying small molecules thatinhibit quorum sensing. It has been proposed that potential sources of quorumsensing inhibitors are soil bac…

I am writing a report on Einsteins theory of relativity and I am stuck. I need to name a few things that came out of the theory for the everyday man and science today. I so far have GPS satellites(the recalculate for the time difference made from the gravity) New energies that work like the sun(fusion) is maybe plausible in the future.(the calculations is based on Relativity theory) But I wonder if you can help me at all I still need maybe 3-4 more but my teacher cant really find any so we agreed to ask here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If any one can help me solve some of these problems I would appreciate it. My teacher told the students this is supposed to be a collaborative exercise, and that we should seek help from what ever or who ever given the fact that this is an extremely difficult test. All the problems are proofs. I have attached a pdf file of the test. Thanks in advancemath260_take_home_test.pdf. -Logan

  4. The question is number (38.2) in page 302 in Numerical Linear Algebra (Trefethen & Bau) We have a real symmetric matrix with eigenvalues: 1, 1.01, 1.02,..., 8.98, 8.99, 9.00 and 10, 12, 16, 24. How many steps of the conjugate gradient iteration must you take to reduce the initial error by a factor of 10^6 ?? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The answer is easy: The condition number of the matrix is k = lamda max / lamda min = 24/1 = 24. So, 1/10^6 = ||e_n|| / || e_0|| < = 2(sqrt(k)-1/sqrt(k)+1)^n . Solving the equation: We get n>= 35.03 . So, we need at least 36 steps of the CG iterati…

  6. I was looking at an example we did in class and the processors clock speed is 24MHz. I need to create a timer that generates an interrupt at 100 Hz. What was done in the example is divide clock freq by the desired interrupt so 24MHz / 100Hz = 240,000. It then says to use a /8 prescaler so you do 24MHz / (8*100Hz) = 30,000. So the timer is equal to 30,000. What I dont understand is how the prescaler is determined. How do you know what prescaler to use? The example says it used a /8 prescaler because "timer can only divide by 1 to 65,536, so use /8" I dont know what this means. Thanks in advanced

  7. Hi I recently did a enzyme-inhibition experiment for my unit 6 coursework and i am now on the part where i have to carry out a statistical test on the data i collected from my experiment. This is what my experiment was bascally about : It was just a simple enzyme-inhibition experiment. SO in a simplifed version : 1. I first poured 5cm3 of milk in to 4different test tubes 2. To another set of 4test tube, I then added 2cm3 of trypsin to each of them and then adden 1cm3 of the inhibitor at a concentration 10-4 mol dm^3. 3. I then poured the solution containing the enzyme trypsin and inhibitors into the milk 4. I then took reading for the Absorbance value fr…

Hallo guys, This is my first message so I hope post this right. I've got a question about if Osteogenic cells are excitable cells or not. I have discussed this with PhD teacher and a PhD student. The student told me that those cells are excitable because they communicate with nerve cells for example. But when I told that to my teacher he was surprised. He told me that as he knows bone cells don't use action potential to communicate but biochem and that is why they are not excitable cells. To be honest I also can not find information about bone cells being excitable cells. So guys if anyone have any information about this please share it? In between sorry for my Englis…

  9. Hey everyone, This is the question: "Two spaceships land on Planet Zork. One holds 50 people from an entirely brown-eyed population. The other carries 50 from a Hardy-Weinberg population in which there is eye colour variation. 32 of the passengers have brown eyes and 8 blue. The blue eyed allele, b, is obviously recessive to brown, B. What is the frequency of the alleles B and b on the planet immediately after the landing?" That's the exam question. First of all, I'm going to assume that there is an error in the question, because 8 + 32 =/= 50. I'm going to change it to 18 blue eyed people. And I correct in assuming this is a typo? Calculating the frequen…

    Hey guys, There something that I can't digest in this chapter: Differentiation I understood the concept, but I just become confuse either for it symbol, calculation, or maybe I'm missing some concept here. Well, I'm actually talking about the calculation in a book I read. Example 1 Given that [math] y = 3x^2 + 4x - 6 [/math], find [math] \frac{dy}{dx}[/math] using the first principle Solution: Given that [math] y = 3x^2 + 4x - 6 [/math] (1) then, [math] y + \delta y = 3(x + \delta x)^2 + 4(x + \delta x) - 6 [/math] (2) (2) - (1): [math]\delta y = [3(x + \delta x)^2 + 4(x + \delta x) - 6] - 3x^2 - 4x + 6 [/math] [math]\delta y = 3x^2…

Hey guys, If anyone could help me out I would be grateful! I have no idea what the genotypes are for these. I thought maybe ZbZ for the male, and ZBW For the female... But that seems too easy. Any help appreciated. Thank you! In chickens, males have two Z sex chromosomes (ZZ) and females have one Z and one W sex chromosome (ZW). The mechanism for inheritance of the sex chromosomes is exactly the same as for X and Y sex chromosomes in other species. In chickens the character of 'barred' or striped feathers is Z-chromosome linked. The barred feather allele ZB is dominant to the non-barred feather allele Zb. Write down the genotype that would result in a non-barred mal…

    hey guys, well, as we know, adding among log like this is easy [math]\log_c A + \log_c B = \log_c AB[/math] but how does to "add" something like this? [math]\log_3 12-3^x = x - 1[/math] and basically, how you calculate add in an equation that has indices and logarithms? I mean if [math]A * A = A^{1+1}[/math] but how about [math]A + A = A^? = 2A[/math]

Hi! If i have an airduct with a fan in it creating a volumetric flow V0 with the following construction: V0 | |----- V1 | |-----V2 | V3 Where the airduct branches into 3 sections. The friction of the airduct is known and the loss coefficient is 0. Also, the pressure before the fan is 1bar and so is the pressure after V1,V2, and V3. The diameters and lengths of the duct sections are known and the density of the air is 1.2. How can i calculate V1, V2 and V3? PS sorry for the crappy english =)

So I need a bit of help. I know when you neutralize an acid, you use a base, and that it creates a salt and H2O. But I only know this in the most general way possible, as my teacher has done one example of this. I don't blame him, I just want practice. So, I have to neutralize H2SO4 with NH4OH. How do I figure out what salt is formed?

Hello All, First off I want to say that I appreciate any help. The directions are to explain how atoms make up organic compounds, which make up all living organisms, addressing all three domains. So I don't want you to answer this, just explain it a little. I am having trouble figuring out what the teacher means by addressing all three domains. I have been struggling with this for the past three days, and have searched the internet as well as read my book several times when I finally came across this forum. Thanks again for any help you may be able to provide! Samantha

Hey guys, In the figure above, ABC and APQ are two triangles such that PQ is parallel to BC. Given that BP = 2cm, CQ = 4cm, BC = 6cm and PQ:BC = 1:3. Find (a) angle of BAC (b) the ratio of the area of [math] \Delta APQ [/math] to the area of trapezium BCQP. for (a). Well, I'm assumed that AP:AB = 1:3 = AQ:QC beforehand, but the calculation doesn't work out. (Answer = 75"31') and what I learn on this chapter is sine rule, cosine rule, and area of triangle based on these rule. so, can anyone give some hint about the trick behind this question because non of the method given can be used! thnx.

  23. I need research materials on areas of computer security and privacy that have not been research and a nod towards were i can get materials. In today's rapidly changing world, security is of great concern. Companies change, undergo mergers and make acquisitions, and their information infrastructure becomes virtual. It is no longer sufficient to guard against a single entrance to a trusted domain; rather, many and diverse connections from the untrusted outside world to the tru…

  25. The instantaneous configuration of a slider crank mechanism has a crank GH 10cm long, the connecting rod HP is 50cm. The crank makes an angle of 60 degree with the inner dead centre position and is rotating at 110 rev/min. Determine the velocity of the piston P and the angular velocity of the link HP. cannot find any simliar examples in text books or online which will help me with this question. Right, first off i've converted the 110rev/min=w into 11.5Rads/s so w=11.5Rads/s i then assumed you had to find the velocity at H in order to find the velocity at P so Velocity at H = (Wgh) X gh Vh = 11.5rads/s X 0.1m = 1.15ms^-1 dont know whether that is correct…
