One historian has written that the “political history of the interwar years must be understood . . . against the background of the rise of authoritarian dictatorships.” What characteristics help define authoritarianism? Discuss the experiences of Germany and Russia during the 1920s-1940s in order to illustrate interwar authoritarianism.

How did both China and India attempt to forge new nations in the first half of the twentieth century? What obstacles did each on face? Who were the key leaders and how did they attempt to overcome these obstacles?


1. discuss the major causes and consequences of World War II.

 

2. What was the Cold War? How did it affect Europe in the years after WWII? In what ways did the United States respond to the Cold War? How did the Cold War spread beyond Europe?

 

3. discuss the major people and events in China from 1949 to 1989. What were the major political and economic shifts of this period?

For the Independence of India, I suggest look the following points.

1. The establishment of the British East India Company and the seize of the kingdoms under Robert Clive ( emphasis on the Battle of Plassey in 1757)

2. The First War of Independence (1857)

3. Rise of Nationalism in India (emphasis on Raja Rammohan Ray, Syed Ahmed Khan, etc)

4. Formation of Congress, its subsequent struggles

5. Assertive Nationalism (emphasis on efforts of Tilak, Bipin Chandra and Lajput Ray), Partition of Bengal (1905)

6. Lucknow Pact, Home Rule Movement

7. Gandhiji's struggle (Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience, Quit India )

8. Leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose

9. Partition and Independence of India.
