I remember reading somewhere that the poles could shift? Is this something that is likely or just lies spun by the rumour mill?

Magnetic poles flip every so often — it's happened a number of times in the past. By most accounts we are overdue for another field reversal.

 

The rotational axis wanders around, too — there are a number of contributions to the wobbling of the earth's spin.
