That hasn't been shown to be incorrect. It is just a reasonable assumption: the cosmological principle.

It seems to be to be something more than a reasonable assumption. In that if we were in a special place in the universe (a special place in terms that it is different in like a particular place in a spherical object, for example) it would presumably place restrictions on the construction of the universe. Restrictions incompatible with observations, unless of course, the special place is we are at the centre of the universe.

 

I think the idea of a particular or special place for us was dropped long ago when we abandoned the idea of Earth being at the centre of the solar system.
