Powerful HIV antibodies found for vaccine

Looks like a cure for HIV around the corner.

Washington - US scientists have discovered the most effective HIV antibodies to date, which could be used to find a vaccine for the virus, according to a study published in Science Thursday.

A team of researchers coordinated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found the two proteins that can neutralize more than 90 per cent of known global strains of HIV.

The VRC01 and VRC02 antibodies neutralize more strains with greater strength than any other previously known antibody, the study said.

After finding out how the antibodies work and where they attach to the virus, the scientists have started developing a potential vaccine. They also said that their work could be used in HIV treatment.

"In addition, the technique the teams used to find the new antibodies represents a novel strategy that could be applied to vaccine design for many other infectious diseases

Doctors failing to spot severe superbug infections in children: Survey

Children in Canada are being hospitalized with serious drug-resistant superbug infections that doctors may not be suspecting in many cases, a nationwide survey suggests.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in children are occurring in most parts of the country, according to a new study from the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program, which collects data from more than 2,500 pediatricians and other specialists monthly to monitor rare diseases and conditions in Canadian children.

MRSA — a bacterium that is immune to a host of penicillin-type antibiotics — can cause infections of the skin and soft tissues beneath the skin, aggressive bone infections and severe pneumonia.

The study confirmed 72 cases of hospitalized children with MRSA infections in 2009; another 34 cases are expected to be confirmed as MRSA. Researchers say the numbers underestimate the extent of the problem, because the survey relies on doctors to voluntarily report cases.

I know there was some talk some years ago how some people believe the AIDS virus and superbug flesh eating bacteria may go airborn and be worse than the common cold that is how many people will get it.
