Inks, dyes, pigments, anilines...

Hi.

Some basic experiments turn fluids to different colors depending on its properties, to determine its characteristics.

Are the colored particles at molecular size?

Dyes, inks, are their color at molecular size or just to the size of its finely ground material in suspension ? Example, fountain pen ink.

Take a look at the molecular structure of some common dyes:

Coomassie blue:

Carminic acid (cochineal)

Methyl red:

Notice anything similar? I can explain why they're coloured when I have more time :P
