Ok I'm not sure if this is alright, but I was hoping I might be able to have a little bit of help finding some items for a chemistry class.

 

The only one I need help with right now is:

1) A ternary compound that contains a halogen

Ok I think I've found everything, but I'd like to check my answers...If that's ok:

 

1) 0.58 moles of Sodium Bicarbonate

A: 48.73 grams of Baking Soda

 

2) A sample of the element that requires 12 more electrons to achieve the electron configuration of the 4th period noble gas.

A: Chromium: Stainless Steel

 

3) The amount of air that would contain the exact amount of nitrogen gas that would combine with 1.0 gram of hydrogen to produce ammonia.

A: N - 78% of air so: 5.927 grams of air (after calculations)

 

4) A ternary compound that contains a halogen.

A: Bleach: Sodium hypochlorite: NaOCl

 

5) "Something" that will demonstrate the conversion of rotational energy to wave energy.

A: A fan (Fan blades rotate and you can hear the noise they make (wave energy))

 

6) Demonstrate a neutralization reaction. Write a balanced equation for the reaction.

A: Baking soda (NaHCO3 ) and vinegar (CH3COOH ): CH3COOH + NaHCO3 -> H2O + NaOCOCH3 + CO2

 

7) A homogenous mixture of a solid and a liquid.

A: Milk: solid fat globules dispersed throughout

 

8) SiO2

A: Quartz: Dendritic Quartz

 

9) A system at physical equilibrium (physical meaning different phases) that involves a solid.

A: Saturated sugar water

A: Milk: solid fat globules dispersed throughout

 

Nope, even homogenized milk is heterogeneous -- the fat globules are different than the aqueous part. That makes it a colloid. Also, I think the fat globules are liquid.

 

Some of the substances you already mentioned would qualify.

 

8) SiO2

A: Quartz: Dendritic Quartz

 

Correct but you can find a much easier example on the seashore.

Hmm ok, for the homogenous mixture of the solid and liquid, would salt water, or sugar water work? I was concerned that it might not, seeing as the salt/sugar is actually dissolved...
