Im not a scientist or anything but i was reading 1001 things you should know about science earlier today and i kinda wondering if scientists could like splice the dna of white blood cells to change the outer membrane into not letting the aids virus in?

and then i figured its either 1 impossible,2 already been done or 3 i might be able to help science = P

i decided to look it up and found myself lost in the science talk of the pages that i found so id like some feedback on this idea of mine and such.

and dont be afraid to be like....your an idiot man....

 

oh and id like it if some people would point me towards a place i can find out more on the subject.

No need for 6 billion peoples on earth to do that DNA reconstruction operation i think. We know HIV/AIDS is not a disease like a Swine flu that easily attack people. It's more like this: If you surf porn websites your computer may be attacked by virus or worms. So, you should just avoid doing it. Same goes for HIV/AIDS.

I am no expert at AIDS, so correct me if I am wrong.

 

AIDS, as far as I know, does not attack all the cells of the body. Rather it targets the cells associated with the immune system. It is called the auto Immune deficiency disease and not leg or heart disease, since it does not go after leg or heart cells.

 

What that means, most cells of the human body are not very specific for AIDS. How would you trick the virus in thinking the immune system is some other system within the body that it does not target? It would be like putting reindeer antlers on the pet dog, so AIDS thinks it is a reindeer and moves on to look for the dog.

#2 is correct. It has indeed been done already, and was in fact first done a few millennia ago to combat various other diseases. The drawback is that this weakens the immune system against other diseases; it is a trade-off. See here for more: CCR5-delta32 However, this was done by evolution; it is not available as a cure nor a vaccine -- just genetic heritage.
