Can You ID These?

Featured Replies

Here are a few beetles I have found in my backyard pool skimmers.
I think the first 2 may be darkling beetles, and the third one I am not sure of. The fourth one might be a scarab beetle?

My interests are in the spiders, so I have a few sites for them.

I'll look around though.

Ugh. And entomology was a one of my major streams in Zoology :/

I can get you a resource. Ill get back to you :)

I dunno about everyone else, but the links didn't work for me (just brought me back to this forum).

Try copying and pasting the urls that I posted into your address bar. Its kindof odd, the same thing happened to me. The images dont seem to be loading.

The bottom one looks like a japanese beetle, Although if it were, it appears his antennae have been removed. It's hard for me to tell though without being able to tell how big it is, or the actual colors on it.

Well, its antennae are there, just hanging down in the wrong direction. I couldn't perk them up:) The "Japanese" beetle is about 3/4 inch long.

The others are about 1.5 to 2 (im just estimating.)

HOWEVER: Through many many many many google searches, a few somewhat comprehensive dichotomous keys and an Autobun guide, I have successfully identified all 4 specimens.

The First: Longhorn beetle; Fam: Cerambycidae, Genus: Archodontes, Sp: melanopus.

The Second: Same species as first; just different age.

The Third: Ground Beetle: Fam: carabidae, Genus: calosoma, sp: sycophanta.

The ground beetle is really a beutiful specimine, he is in perfect condition, and is full of irridecent colors. Greens, oranges, blues, etc. He was a nice find.

The Fourth: Scarab Beetle: Fam: Scarabaeidae, Genus: gymnetis.

Sorry for terrible grammar, I’m on the rush today.
