Mitochondrial sequenceing

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I am quite new to molecular biology!

I recently sequenced a number of mitochondrial genomes and found a number of sequence variants.

I want to do a homology search online to see if the sequence variants I have found are evolutionarilly conserved or not.

I am a bit lost where to start ,

Any ideas?

Start on the ncbi site. You can do a lot there using the BLAST search.

Just google "NCBI BLAST" and you can find the link. Takes a while to get acquainted but it is the best tool out there for sure.

Blast tells you about global homologies and related sequences. If you want to find out whether there are conserved areas you should proceed by getting further mitochondrial sequences (from the area that you sequenced) and do an alignment (e.g. using clustal).
