I am new to SFN and have only made 2 or 3 posts, but I am unable to reply to a thread within the politics section of the site...is this due to permissions associated with new users?

Yes. I don't know what the limit is but I think you need around 10 or 15 posts in the science sections before you can post in politics. The idea behind this is that this is a science forum and not a politics one and people joining here should do so because they want to discuss science.

the Politics forum is now closed to members with less than 30 posts who have been registered for less than one month.
