I recently have been told that I got a new message from here, but when I look, all of them are read, except for one with no title that says it was sent at January 1, 1970. I'm guessing that that is a bug.

Nope. Says absolutely nothing other than the date, which means I can't click on it to read it.

 

Also, if it was from deleting spam messages, I got one which was never deleted. I deleted it, though, so...

Ah, that'd be it then. I checked the database and there exists a listing for it in one database table but no corresponding title/text entry in another table. I deleted one without deleting the other, it seems.

 

Next time I'll remember to be more careful when deleting spam PMs. Be sure to report them if you receive them.

It appears to not remember the PM in my inbox, but it's still in notifications apparently.

I need to figure out where that notification gets its data, I guess.

Got a PM yesterday, which I read, and now the notifications box lists 1 unread PM.

Right, I've added recounting unread PMs to my to-do list for later today. This system is surprisingly fragile.

I too am getting the "Unread Private Messages" fake out.

It's still there, had returned promptly after you got rid of it.

Try logging out and then logging back in. You might have an old cookie or something.

Nah, it's stored in vB's database tables. Every time I reset the counter it seems to change back. Not sure what's confusing it.

Alternatively you could go to the admin view for the spamming user and "Delete all messages sent by this user" after you ban them
