How does extreme nerve excitation cause shock?

Quote from the below site:

"An extensive superficial burn produces great immediate shock, due to involvement of so many sensory nerve endings in the skin".

What is the mechanism by which this shock occurs?

Is this shock fatal?

It doesn't. Look at the way the book is written - it's probably either from 1850 or a reprint from that time.

It's worth noting that books are not peer-reviewed sources - any moron can claim anything in a book.
