Hello,

 

I would like some assistance on how to use the NCBI website (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) to identify an unknown sequence.

 

I have a 1000 bp sequence & need to identify the gene it came from.

Use the BLAST programs. Generally searching for 100% matches has only limited value in real analyzes, hence alignment programs as BLAST are used.
