Yes, there is proof.

 

Part of the problem here is I don't think you've realised that the moons orbit isn't circular. Like almost every orbit, it's an elipse, with the thing its orbiting around at one of the foci (in this case, the earth).

 

You want to know another really easy way to check?

 

I'm going to draw a diagram, check back in a bit!
