Halite crystals

Featured Replies

Anyone know of some good ways to grow HUGE CUBIC halite (NaCl) crystals?

Accidentally, as I find many things out by accident... I left a few paper towels in a saturated salt solution. Then, I let it sit for a good three weeks. When the solution was nearly evaporated, I found some nice 1/8 inch cubic crystals of salt growing on the towel. I assume that the capillary action of the towel soaked up the salt water slowely, leaving it to evaporate?

Well, does anyone have some ideas to improve the experiment, perhaps making it more practical, ultimately, making huge 1 inch cubes? :)

Well plain evaporation woould work if you had a pure NaCl solution, as for your method multiple towels very close together...the only problem is to seperate the towels and teh crystakls afterwards
