Muriatic Acid

Featured Replies

What is the mole count on Hydrochloric acid contained in Muriatic acid? I've poured it on aluminum and zinc and it makes some strong reactions. This kind of goes along with the "making hydrochloric acid thread."

Thanks for the help.

Muriatic acid is just another term for it, still can be any concentration. But I take it you're referring to the kind they sell in pool stores and such, and thats around 23-26% HCl by volume.

? Muriatic acid is another term for a certain(s) concentration of HCl?

Why is it one of its old names? Why the other name..........

Muriatic acid is another term for HCl in any concentration.

The bottle says it is 31.45% hydrochloric acid. It was inexpensive too. It only cost $2.00 for one gallon.

Yeah. I usually take that and distill it into a more concentrated form.

A good rule of thumb is not to try to distill your own concentrated acids if you don't know what distillation is ;)

I know the basics of distillation, but do you use expensive equipment or readily available materials?

I use about $60 worth of glassware for distillation in my home lab.

that`s nearly as strong as you can get HCl(aq) anyway, any more concentrated and you`de not be able to store it at standard RTP.

I`de stick with what you`ve got :)
