Why was salt thought to be an element in the past?

Featured Replies

in the past they based elements on compounds based off if they observably decomposed after heat being applied to them...

how come salt was not classified as a compound and an element instead?

is it because no changes that the eye could detect occurred?

How much heat needs to be applied to salt before it decomposes?
